Major Problem!!!

The other day I went to turn my computer (tower) on and it didn't work. I opened it up to see if anything wasn't plugged in, but it was all in tact. The power button doesn't seem broken so I don't know what the problem is. However, there are these three spiral cords that plug into prongs. One is green and white, another is red and white, and the third is black and white. That may be the problem because the cords lead to the power button. Can anyone help me here b/c I really want my computer back!!!

Power supply is the mian problem.

Check the power supply Fan , located at the back of the pc . You may need to replace that!

could be the switch on the motherboard as well.

You can short out two pins on the powersupply (ATX) to see if it will ping on manually. This is not a work load test, just a functionality test. Unhook your PSU then plug it into some power. Kill the two pins with a paper clip, do the fans come on? Also if you have access to a multimeter you can test the voltages on them, should be +/- 5 and +/-12 (give or take a volt)

here is diagram you can use to verify which pins to short

well im reading this article on the website about it and i have no idea what they're talking about. ill try to make this more specific b/c u might be thinking of something else

there are 3 twisted double wires coming from the front of the tower (im thinking it might be near the power switch). one of the double twisted wires are red & white, another is green & white, and the third is black & white. they each have two holes are the end so they can plug into a two-pronged spot. the black & white one plugs into a two prong away from the other two while the red & white and green & white ones plug into a set of 9 prongs but in certain spots.

what tlarkin was talking about... doesnt sound like it would apply to my case... so plz someone send me some more feedback if you know what im talking about. at about 2:30 ill have pictures of it posted if you'd like to see what im talking about.

adz 619 ... ill try looking at the fans but they look perfectly fine. i mean, one minute i was on the computer and everything was running smoothly and it was purring like a kitten and then next minute it just wouldn't turn on. i seriously think it's those prongs but ill check the fans. now what fan would it be... the top one by the power cord outlet or the one in the middle?

The problem is not your power button!

Something probably failed, but not your power button. Check what tlarkin said, and check if your power supply blew, which is more than likely the case.

i dont even know what he's talking about though... like can u tell me where in my computer i can find that b/c i know my PC inside and out and idk what he's telling me to do or where i locate it

OH DAMN!!! I know what tlarkin is talking about now... its that 20 pronged cable that comes out of the box that contains the power supply fan.

well now im familiar with where im supposed to do this but not with exactly what im supposed to do... : (

oh and another question... what does this do for me? like... how do i fix this if the fans come on / or if they dont come on?

The big powersupply connector that conencts to the motherboard. If you take a paper clip and push each end of the paper clip into both those ports on the powersupply illustrated in the pic linked above, it should power on and the fan should spin.

If this is the case the powerswitch in your powersupply is operational and it could more likely be the switch on the motherboard.

Just note that the notch that snaps the connector on is on a certain side of the pic.

This is called process of elimination. Do the fans spin? then the PSU turns on and you can possibly look at motherboad issues.

i did the thing with the paperclip and the fan in the power supply spins. but the thing is, i dont know what to do from there. i read the previous posts and im still kinda stuck. so can someone plz tell me what to do from here?

can someone plz take a look at this thread and tell me what im supposed to do now...!

if the powersupply pings on it means it is working. If it can hold a load or not is another story. I think it could be the switch on your motherboard unfortuneately.

If you get a multimeter you can test for voltages to see if you are in spec

Do you by any chance know the model of the motherboard or if its a manufactured PC then the brand and model? This might help identify the mobo then if we can get some pictures it could be easier to see if there is a mobo issue.

Also is there any other computer that you can use to use to test the power supply on?

So if it powers up that means its not dead, but still could be to weak to power the system! Try checking the power button-Where the 2 pin power button plugs into the motherboard, pull it off and ground the two prongs on the board and see if it fires up!

tlarkin - the power supply pings on just fine. so im guessin that the hook in the motherboard must be dying down. it was kinda weird how it went from purring like a kitten to dying in a matter of ten seconds.

gamerman4 - all i can tell you about the motherboard is that it's inside an eMachines computer. if i knew how to find out anything else about it, then i would tell you.

StrangleHold - are you talking about the multi corded plugs Ex: the black and white, red and white, and green and white plugs? and what do you mean ground them? yeh im pretty confused : (

The power button on the case, does your case have one solid motherboard connector for your power button,HDLED, reset switch, case speaker or are they all single

ummm... idk exactly. i CAN tell you that from the power button runs three different wires... idk if all 3 run from that button though. There's

- a green and white plug that fits a two prong
- a black and white plug that fits a two prong
- a red and white plug that fits a two prong

the green and white one i found out turns on a little blue light at the front of the tower so i think i should leave that one where it is

so to answer ur question... no it's not one single connector... there are three. and i think that might be the problem here... so now what?

Need to find the one from the power switch, it could be marked on the board, most will have four-Power switch, powerLCD,reset,HDLCD, anyway when you find the right one pull the wire off and ground the power switch pins on the motherboard with a jumper and hook everything up, now the power switch on the case wont work now so just plug in the system and see if it fires up, if it does its the power button on the case, if not you have a bad board or P/S

there is one on there that says power on it. now when you say ground the power switch pins on the MoBo w/ a jumper do you mean like rip the wire off the plug and connect it to the prong on the MoBo through a paperclip or somethin?

and another ?.... what would happen if i had a bad motherboard... what action would i have to take to get my PC up and runnin again?
