Maxtor 120 gb hard drive problem

I thought it was 128MB? 256MB recommended?

See if your brother can get memtest86 on an CD for you. Scan your memory, if it comes up bad then you'll need another stick.

I don't think he can do that because he couldn't even install XP.

If the problem is like what Cromewell had said, what he should do is take out one stick of RAM and try installing XP if it still fails try putting in the other stick and try installing again.

I think that is how they got the information they gave you. Did you try taking out 1 stick of your ram and seeing if it would boot? Make sure that the remaining stick of ram is in slot 1 of your motherboard, if it did not work take out that stick and try the other one.

How old is your computer. Do you know the specs of your system? If it was built by one of the big companys, what is the make and model number of your system.

If you built it yourself then tell us what motherboard you are using.

Trying to help you with out some information is next to impossible.
