Messed Up Dell

Hello,

My sister has a Dell computer, it is about 5 years old or so. A few weeks ago it got all messed up and it wouldnt let her run anything on it, so we did a reformat and my dads friend installed the drivers (she lost them) and new RAM (2 GBs). Well recently it crashes every so often, about once or twice a day. I had taken out one of the sticks of RAM and it worked fine for a few days, then the problem came back of it crashing. So I took that stick out and put in the other one today, it hasn't crashed yet but is there a way to make it run smoothly? I still have her old 756 mb of RAM. I am giving her my computer (as listed in the signature but without the monitor) and I am taking hers. Is there anything I should watch out for on her computer? I am only taking it for a little while, then I will probably get my laptop a bit later.

It just goes to a bluescreen and it says something like general failure or memory dump, I don't really use it, I am taking it into my room tomorrow though so I can expand more on that. Oh, and would linux 8.10 run on that machine?

Do you know where I could get all the right dell drivers for it? My dads friend works in IT and he got all the drivers, he said it might be the RAM.

Ok, no crashing, BUT sound doesn't work (hasn't for a while), my sisters friend came over and she unplugged the speakers and when she plugged them back in (a while ago) does anyone have any idea what could make it work? I've tried 3 different sets of speakers, might it be a sound card problem?

yeah, but it wasn't working before he reformatted it either. But when I say a while back i mean like a year ago it wasnt working, and a few weeks ago is when we reformatted.

If the sound card was added in after the dell was made then it wouldn't be a dell driver. You would have to look up the driver for the sound card. Maybe the driver wasn't on there in the first place, i've seen drivers just stop working because of registry problems. Try to find out what kind of sound card it is, then look for the driver for it. If that still doesn't work then i'm gunna have to say that the sound card is just toast. Look in the device manager too, and make sure it is detecting it.
