More Memory Required?

I have an intermittent fault with my computer. At its worst, the screen refreshes in three distinct vertical sections at different rates. This also happens when scrolling up or down a page of text. I am thinking of replacing the tower but it has been suggested to me that the problem may be due to a shortage of memory. Does anyone else think this might be the case. I am running Windows XP Home Edition on 256mb RAM.
If this is a possibility, would it be a straight forward task for me to install either a bigger memory board or even add an additional board. Thank you in advance to anyone who can offer me suggestions.

256MB is low for windows XP. I would want at least 512MB or possibly 1GB if you do more than browse the internet/email/office tasks.

If you know what type of RAM your computer uses then it's fairly easy, all you have to do it push the memory into a slot the right way. It's keyed so you can't push it in backwards.

agreed it could also be that u have not installed your vid card drivers it happent to me with all my computers untill i install the proper drivers

If you are using onboard graphics then this will be stealing some of your precious memory so in reality you have less than 256MB.

More memory is needed.

Thank you guys for your help. The Motherboard was replaced about a year ago and it has integrated graphics so it seems worthwhile to buy more memory and see what happens. One last question, can I just add the additional memory or should I remove the old memory card? Thanks again

Ian

Faster RAM should clock down to the speed of what you have already but I would try to get RAM that is the same speed if you are going to add it to what you have already.
