Motherboard problems.

Hey guys I think my motherboard is going bad. Its a Gigabyte GA-K8NS Pro (socket 754). This is a system I built about 4 years ago. All of a sudden all of my USB ports stop responding, and my computer randomly crashes or freezes. Especially when using Firefox (Firefox will give me an error message and as soon as I close the message the computer crashes). I have a Boom mic, Ext. HDD, CD/DVD Burner, and a 4-port USB Hub thing all plugged in to my USB slots on the MOBO. At some point during the Windows loading screen everything will respond like its going to work, and then shut off. For example, the power light comes on for the mic, the activity light on the HDD comes on. But then they shut off again within seconds, and wont respond when in Windows. I have tried Device Manager and didn't get far. The problem is the computer won't stay on long enough to do anything. I am convinced its the MOBO causing the USB problems, but I'm not quite sure about the crashing. The computer is kind of "fragile", what I mean is sometimes it will randomly turn on or off just by plugging something in a PCI slot or something like that.

So I am ready to buy a new MOBO on Ebay, (I wish I had the funds to build a new system). I found one that I think would work quite well, the "Biostar K8NHAG" on geeks.com ebay account. I have never heard of Biostar and was hoping someone can either tell me how to fix my current MOBO, or tell me if I should or shouldn't buy this one. Its pretty much the same as the Gigabyte one, just a little less RAM capability, but oh well. Anyway, hopefully you guys can help, sorry for the long post.

Have you tried starting up and running your pc without any of your usb devices plugged in to see if that really is the problem?

Are all of your USB devices connected to the hub or are some plugged directly into the ports on your motherboard?

The whole turning on or off thing when unplugging PCI cards etc.. is a common issue, its mainly because you're not supposed to touch the internals without unplugging the power cord from the PSU.

Biostar are an extremely low-end and cheap motherboard manufacturer, but if it's literally to get the system back up and running then it will do fine, dont expect huge performance bursts out of it, and dont plan on any gaming with it...

But to answer your question, on the fore-front of it, it does sound like the motherboard is dying a slow death

Hey Thanks Dragon,

yeah I tried running the computer without any of the components plugged in. They are all unplugged currently since they aren't working. They were all plugged into the ports on the MOBO and not into the hub. I did try to plug a camera into the hub and that didn't work either. So do you think I should get the BIOSTAR or is there another one that is similar that you or anyone can suggest? I really need the AGP 8x slot for video, and I would like to do 3Gigs of RAM. Also I really need the Firewire port which is why I picked out the BIOSTAR. I don't really want the BIOSTAR but I think its pretty much my only option. Thanks
