MSI or Asus and a few other ????

Sort of wish there was a general hardware topic forum (for the few questions) as I am about to build my first gaming comp in my price range and anyways... which would fit me better?

MSI K8N Neo Platinum or ASUS K8N-E Deluxe both at Socket 754

I'm leaning more towards the Asus for some reason but can't figure out why. I'll be adding the following to it. Speak your mind, it won't hurt me... just looking for a gaming comp as my laptop FPS is horrible.

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3400+
Motherboard: probably the Asus one above
PSU: Ultra X-Connect 500w
Sound Card: Creative Labs Audigy 2 ZS Gamer Edition - already purchased at an amazing price
Case: Antec Super Lanboy... may change... I have silly ideas in my head
HDD: WD Caviar 160GB 7,200 RPM SATA
HDD: WD Raptor 36.7GB 10,000 RPM 8M Cache SATA 150
RAM: not sure... I'm a Crucial fan but after reading I might go Corsair... either way each and every slot will be receiving a 512
Video Card: Undecided... clearly an 8x AGP... either 128 or 256... it will be an nVIDIA GeForce... probably be the last thing I buy

Another question, an SATA 150 hooked up to an SATA 133 will just run slower correct?

Also to clarify for myself, the Raptor drive will be master with OS and the Caviar would be slave with all the other crap correct?

TIA

Hands down MSI

You might be able to score a 300GB 16MB cache drive for that....

Have a read http://www.computerforum.com/showthread.php?t=11096

Should be much higher on your list -- especially for a gaming system -- and specifically should come well before ... um ... the case.

No such thing as SATA 133 (and its not doable even if I understand what you mean cuz of different physical specs). Read up http://www.computerforum.com/showthread.php?t=10947

Why not get the MSI Neo4 Platinum SLI, with SLI mode you can have 2 video cards bridges together for awsome performance or just for it to be there for future insurance for a good upgrade. Reading a few reviews on the Neo4 says that it is better then the Gigabye and the Asus but still does not catch up to the DFI yet but they are very close together. I would recomment getting the MSI Neo4 Platinum SLI with a 939-pin CPU.

Check the motherboad out here its a very nice board!

So then would you say DFI over MSI?

Don't think I'll be needing anything that large... but a 200 or 250 in the 16MB cache department looks good.

The reasons this was last were that I was waiting for a good deal. I'm looking at either the 6600 or 6600 GT... possibly a 6800... but I'm trying to spend less than $200 on a graphics card. From what I read the main difference between distributors (XFX or Rosewill) is the cooling, customer service and driver updates, is that correct?

Ahh got me, I miss read the ATA 133...

Hehe, sorry to be the different one but I'm going Abit for my next build. They always seem to have good boards, and my last couple ones from them have been wonderful.

Pretty much but no matter what brand you use all the drivers will come from nVidia.

I would personally choose ASUS :)

Actuly it matters.
My mobo from chaintech always had minor problems, Including crashes, sound problems (no 5.1) and small thingies.
But between Asus and MSI choose the one with more fetures :)

See the context of my reply: it was between the ASUS and the MSI :) MSI's K7 boards were crummy but they've done a decent job with their K8s

Just a point to indicate the sheer overpriced-ness of the drive

1. get Drivers from nvidia
2. customer service ... errrrm ... can be important but usually isnt
3. cooling is generally stock nvidia specificied cooling
4. the main consideration is usually price

.
Abit makes nice boards (acept their early K8 boards but thats not their fault, all makers had crappy K8 boards but that's cuz of Via......)

I would personally choose ASUS
Any hard reasons (other than personal preference?)

Just because YOU had problems with that board doesnt mean all products made by the company are bad.
