my computer will not turn on Please help!

Woah, Woah! Before you go buying a new one, Make sure it IS the PSU that's gone. Did you say it didn't have the same connections? It should do... A 24 Pin Power, A 4 Pin Power, then your standard Molex, SATA and PCI-e Connections. Don't want to waste your money!

Do you not have a more modern PSU that you can try, or perhaps borrow off somebody? I wouldn't go throwing money at a new PSU unless you know for sure, it's the PSU that's dead. ;)

If you don't have another PSU to try, Can you borrow one?

Or, If you can't, Can you try your 'burnt' PSU in another computer?

Yeah, That'd be a good idea. I'm sure you don't want to be buy a new PSU, Only to discover that your computer still doesn't work :P

my computer is a compaq presario with a 2.13 GHz amd processor. 996mb(i believe, should be close to 1 gig) of ram, 1 80 gig hard drive, 1 180gig hard drive. then two dvd burners. the power supply in the computer is a bestec, it says that the output max of teh power supply is 250W

oh God 250 Watts...no wonder...
I have a Windows 98 PC with a K6 and 64 MB RAM in the garage somewhere with 250 watt PSU. And your PC has more power requirements than that old 98 PC amongst others in my garage!
I feel sorry for you.

If you and anyone else doesn't want to be succombed to all this drama,
BUILD YOUR OWN PC.

hahah i would love to build my own pc sometime but right now i cant. i just took my tower over to my friends house and hooked up the power supply from one of his dead ones to mine and it turned on. so the final conclusion is that i need a new power supply, thank you to everyone who helped me!

okay got the new power supply today plugged in the dvd drives and hard drives, then the 20 pin then i got to the 4 pin and it would not go in. the pattern on the power supply is different than the one on the mother board.....do i have to get another power supply?
