Until I got the drivers installed... this thing Screamed... it really did sound like a small hair drier... now that it's set up though I never hear it unless I jack the fan up pretty high in this Hot Loft I'm staying in.

the gigabyte at 100% sounds like the reference design at 50% (at least that's what the reviewer said
), which gives about the same performance cooling wise but is much quieter. plus, it is cheaper

Yes, the front fan is a blue LED fan.

Reference cards are for girls.
"Equipping with 8.5cm Extra Large Fan & Pure Copper Fins, we proudly deliver 17% cooler performance than reference design."
Remember, much of what is stated on the boxes of cards is there for marketing purposes. For all we know, that 17% cooler is at automatic fan speeds, which could have higher fanspeed profiles set. There are many many ways to make a product appear to be better.

Windows 7 Home Premium is plenty, Professional and Ultimate have nothing that a home user would need, some extra networking tools and drive encryption tools, but again, nothing a home user will need.

I love the games they play with the marketing. I ended up getting the card for the price I think I was seeing the reference cards at, and the benchmarks (example) were consistently higher, Overclocker's members were gushing over the card, and all the reviews were all very positive, including Hardware Canucks'. Plus, It comes in a cool box.

Like i said, just because a card is factory overclocked doesnt mean it overclocks better than any other card.Thanks so much to everyone on here! All of you have been more than helpful and I wish I had a way to repay you all. So as of now I took a lot of bomberboysk's advice along with other suggestions and here is what I've come up with..

With the core clock at 850 Mhz, I wonder if that is considered factory overclocked on a 5870? You know that stuff a lot better than I do, obviouslly. That said, I do think I know what you mean as I think those higher bench's came from OC'ing the card and your saying any reference card can be OC'd.
I do like to think that the (supposedly/apparently) better cooling made the card a good deal at the price at the time since I was pretty much paying the same price as a reference card.
Whether the cooling actually does work well enough to give it any actual advantage for OC'ing, or how much, I'll never know. Even at stock the thing is overkill and probably will be for quite a while.
Thanks for trading messages. This stuff is interesting and might be something I'd want to know about if I end up getting into gaming art. If nothing else, I'm sure I'll build again. I learn a lot from your posts.
