i had to recase my computer yesterday, i have been using 4 x 512 sticks of ram but when i put it all back together in the new case it will only accept 2 sticks and if i put anymore in it will beep at me when i turn it on and it will not boot up ???? any ideas

Is it only certain sticks that don't work or certain slots? Like for example, the two sticks that are in there now and working, if you just swap them for the other two in the same slots does it work? Also, for the two that work, did you try moving them to the other two slots?

Just trying to determine if the ram stick(s) died or a slot on the board died.

Well I've got 4 slots marked dimm1, 2, 3 and 4 all of the sticks work in 1 and 3 but not in 2 and 4

Yeah looks like two slots on the motherboard died in the swap. ECS is known for being pretty crappy sorry to say. Time to upgrade!

Actually ECS has quite alot of good boards, then again, they also have quite alot of not so good boards.

You bought it new? Should have some kind of warranty.

Static charge most likely, or broke a trace from flexing the board.

Going from a socket 939 is a bit of a pain, but you should really upgrade completely. Do you have any kind of budget in mind?

I'm guessing your 3650 is AGP, so you'll even need a new video card too. You also only have ddr1 ram, so you can't even re-use that either.

I'll try keeping this as cheap as possible, but still good hardware and upgradeable-

And a SATA dvd burner since all new motherboards only have 1 IDE port which you'll need for your hard drive-

Thats around $300 for a PC thats soooooo much better than what you have now. And very future upgradeable! You're going from ddr1 to ddr3, from socket 939 to AM3, from AGP to PCIe 2.0, from a 3650 to a 5550 which is a nice big step up, with this setup you'll be able to play most modern games at decent resolution. The 5550 is about as strong as a 4650 or 4670, plus you'll have DX11 support.

As he is in Isle of wight, newegg is no good. Look for the same build at scan and OcUK (I recommend the former)

And why is a new DVD drive needed? If the board only has 1 IDE port, each IDE ribbon has 2 connectors, just set the DVD to master, HDD to slave and they can be kept as well

Oh whoops, didn't notice his location.

Well he has two hard drives, so I'm assuming they are already set up that way ;)

I'll post up stuff from ebuyer instead in a minute.

OK well I may have found a cheaper alternative anyway. If you get this board here-

Just use the onboard graphics until you can afford a good graphics card. The onboard is pretty much as good as your current AGP 3650 anyway.

Thats only 200 pounds for a complete overhaul upgrade. Not bad at all! Keep saving then for a decent video card, like a 5770 or something and you'll be all set. Future upgradeable to better AM3 cpu's, including the new Hex core, and of course you can always get more and better ram.

You can try and sell your current system as a set with 2x512mb of ram and state that two slots on the board don't work, you may get ~$40-50 back.

i will defenetly save up for that this is cheap, cheers mate you have realy helped me

No problem, it will be worlds faster than your current setup.

Is your 160gb hard drive a SATA or IDE drive? If it's an IDE, try and get a SATA drive while you are buying stuff because it makes a huge difference in speed.

This drive here is fairly cheap, and pretty quick for it's price-

Thats just if your drive is an IDE, if it's SATA that you're fine. Just make sure your main operating system is on the sata drive.

With that stuff your PC is going to be so much faster you won't know how to act  :good:
