My New Build

Just got it up and running.

I put together my old computer about 6 years ago. It was a champ. About the only problem was the fan on the CPU died a couple of years ago, luckily the ASUS board shut down when it got hot. Hope my new one lasts as well as it did.

My new build:

OS Suse 11.3 64bit http://software.opensuse.org/113/en

MOBO ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131646

CPU Athlon x4 3.0 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103871

CPU cooler http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103046

HDD Samsung 1TB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152185

HDD cooler http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...m_re=hard_drive_cooler-_-11-999-152-_-Product

Video card GT240 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500138

Memory, 8 Gigs http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226095

PSU Corsair 650W http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139005

DVD burner http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106289

I used an old no-name case about 8 or 9 years old I had lying around. Nothing fancy. Best thing about it is it is a nice elegant beige color, those are getting hard to find :D I broke out the hole saws and installed a bunch of fans in it, it runs nice and cool, and fairly quiet. I installed a front panel to fill the floppy hole http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811996006

I set up the SATA controller for AHCI. I will probably add a SSD at some point. Everything is working well. I like it. :)

Your motherboard did not "switch off". Your CPU shut down, just FYI.

There's a reason those old beige cases are hard to come by...they're ugly! :P

Nice build you got there. :good:

This the first machine you have built...??

Looks like you did a good job using some good parts... not familiar with that OS.....

Looks good to me...you've picked your parts well. What are you doing with it?

If you're gaming, less RAM would have been a good trade off for a better GPU. Outside media editing and some industrial application, there's little reason to have 8GB of RAM. That GPU is also a bit underpowered for gaming. It'll all still work fine though...

Really? It's been around forever...

Thanks,

I've built several over the years, probably a dozen or so. This is the first in a couple years so I had to relearn a lot of stuff, like what fits what. First one was late '90s, forget what the mobo was but it had an AMD 350 Mhz K6-2 overclocked to a whopping 400 Mhz. Man that thing was smoking fast.

I've been using Suse linux for years. I'm used to it so I stick with it.

I don't do any gaming. So I decided not to spend for more GPU than I really need. I could have gotten a cheaper GT240 but what sold me on this card was the fanless cooling. And it will be easy enough to upgrade if I ever need more. The 8 GBs of RAM is about twice what I had planned to get, but prices have dropped a lot lately and it seems like that is the one thing I always end up upgrading so I decided to just go with the 8 gigs and it has the benefit of being a matched set.

I mostly just surf the innernets, but there are times when I have several browser windows open, like 8 or 10, a download or two going, and a DVD burning all at the same time. My old AMD XP2600 used to really bog down at times, bless it's dependable old heart. This system will hopefully handle it.

Ah, makes sense.

It's a solid system...don't see it failing on you any time soon, unless you somehow got a defective part. Happens from time to time, you know?

I'd like to see pics of what you've done to the case.

The two fans in the side are 120s. The front lower hole was cut in years ago for an old build, the other one I cut in for this build. The holes are different sizes, looks kind of funny but it works. There are 80 mm exit fans on top, in the rear, and on the opposite side from the 120s. No front fan. There is also a fan cooling the HDD, I hooked it up to run on 5V, it runs slow and quiet. The HDD is running at 25C according to HD Tune Pro. SpeedFan says the CPU is idling at 32C. The graphics card at 36C. Not sure how much they go up when flogged, probably still OK. I resurrected this case from a corner in my garage where it had been collecting cobwebs for years.

Nice job on that! :good:

I was going to do something similar to an old Gateway case, till I saw that the mobo cover on the back was permanent.
