My revised build...

I don't have the patience to go through an change each part at the moment. I'll do it another time. Thank you...

Maybe go for 4GB of RAM? Or 8GB in 2x4?

Go for a smaller HDD, see how much cheaper a 500GB drive is.

The video card is making this expensive. Maybe go for a 6870 or a 6850. I reckon if you use a 6850 and the changes above you could get it close to £500.

You don't want to be running out of space, 500GB isn't exactly a lot when you've got all your normal programs on there with windows (50GB) and then you start adding on games at 20 / 15GB a piece ...

Whats wrong with the original 550TI ? Its a decent card and will run quite a bit you can throw at it, he's not after extreme performance just decent graphics.

And RAM might be useful depending on what else he's going to do with the system, or what new operating systems might come out.

Windows is not 50GB. More like around 20GB. 500GB is plenty of room anyway.

The 550 Ti isn't exactly a great card, the 6850 or 6870 are faster cards and are much better value for money.

4GB is enough for the time being. 8GB is nice to have, but if he is on a strict budget, 4GB will be fine.

I dislike the look of a processor that isn't i3/i5/i7. I may just be ignorant though....
It does the same thing, just in a different way. Intel is faster clock for clock. AMD is better at multithreading. Personally, I dislike AMD as a company (just some decisions that they have made recently that will come back to bite them in the arse in a year or so).

All you need for gaming is 3 to 4 cores. Most games do not take advantage of more. Main exceptions being BF3 (6 core threading) and FSx (at least 6, maybe 8 core threading).

Its just me. Would take a Unlocked FX 6300 over a i3 3220 anyday. From what I have seen you get a better cheap quality cooler you can get close to 4.5/4.6ghz pretty easy without much voltage.

The FX is the better choice, for gaming it's pretty equal to an i3. Sometimes the i3 wins, sometimes the FX. But the i3 isn't unlocked and isn't great in more then basic operations or gaming, whereas the FX6300 will stand and triumph.
