Need help picking a desktop

I am looking into buying a desktop and all I'd really need it for is playing games, specifically SWTOR. I was wondering if someone could recommend me the cheapest computer that would play SWTOR on highest settings with perfect FPS? Thanks

are you open to building your own computer, better price/performance ratio and better parts, warranties, and we can provide better troubleshooting than most manufacturers and the parts we recomend have good support so once you know what's the problem they can easily help you to replace or repair it. otherwise look at ibuypower.com

I don't know, I feel like I'm not good enough with computers to build my own, although I haven't looked much into it.

look up neweggtv on youtube and go to buildin part 2, that shows you the actual construction which is very simple.

Well, since I've posted this same advice before, I guess I can officially become the "newb builder" cheerleader.

I just built my first computer this month. I know *very* little about computers, but with a little research, watching those newegg videos, and asking questions here on this forum, I was able to successfully build a great computer.

We don't mean to push you to do something you're uncomfortable with, but for all the reasons jonnyp11 mentioned, it really is beneficial to try your hand at it. :good:

I actually just took a look into things, it does seem like a win-win situation. I'll definitely have to start doing some research on it.

I don't know if any of you know about SWTOR or play it, but do you guys have any idea in the price range I'd probably be spending for something to run this game perfectly? I understand a lot comes into play so I'm not trying to get an exact price, just a little bit of an estimate? I don't want to get too much or too little lol. The only games I really would play on this computer are MMOs, but since it'll be a desktop I guess I could always upgrade it if I should get some games that take higher graphics right?

I appreciate all of the help, thank you very much

Right on, yeah, start off with those newegg tv videos.

Sorry, I'm not familiar with SWTOR, so I can't help much on that front. In terms of upgradeable, yeah, so long as you get a motherboard with a newer/futureproof socket, you should be okay. Of course, I'd probably suggest you also get the best CPU you can afford, as well as a good amount of RAM, that way all you'll really need to upgrade later on if you wanted to play other games would be the GPU and possibly the PSU.

Ahhh alright, that's very helpful thank you. Is there an efficient way of getting an idea of all the specific parts I'd want, like I'm not really sure what would be best. I was looking at that site mentioned before "ibuypower" and saw that it had a drop down for like every piece of the computer. I think I could handle putting it together, now I'm just confused about where to get what parts and how to make a good list of what I need. I want to start this ASAP because I currently should have enough $ to put a decent computer together, but it won't last. I'm very bad at saving money D:

thanks again

Are you in the US? I bought all my parts through Newegg and Amazon. I sometimes hear people suggest microcenter, but I've never tried them.

The way I started compiling my parts list is to first start with the CPU, then the motherboard. Then everything else.

So your first decision will be Intel or AMD. Next you'll want to choose the socket type of the CPU, or just choose the best CPU you can afford (without going overboard/buying one that has more power than you need).

There's a lot to the CPU choice, but things you should look at are socket type, GHz speed, # of cores, and the north and south bridge chipsets. You can check benchmark tests for them if you like too, or just ask someone for a suggestion based on your total budget (which is what?)

Once you know the CPU, you can choose a compatible motherboard. You'll want one that supports the brand of CPU you choose, plus the right socket type. For instance I purchased an AMD Phenom II X3, which has a socket type AM3, so I got a motherboard that accepts AM3 and AM3+.

Gigabyte and Asus are both good brands.

That'll be a good start. :D

how much money do you have to spend at this moment, i looked up the recomended settings and really they are fairly low compared to most games, but mmo's are always that way.

Like $700 give or take a small amount, and yeah I know most MMO's don't take that much, that's why I was hoping I could set up something good for this amount that I could always upgrade later. This game does take a considerable amount more than like WoW though.

Oh and I'm in the US, what's the difference between intel and AMD? Would you guys recommend a specific one?

Being VERY general about it, I think most people would suggest Intel if you can afford it, and AMD for the budget-minded. That's not to say one is inherently better than the other. There's a lot to it.

And again, that is a gross generalization, as there are plenty of people who have huge budgets sand still go AMD.

Alright so I'm going to start working on a list that fits my budget, I think my budget is definitely going to be around $700 +/- $100. So like you said, find a motherboard and CPU first and then go from there. I'll probably use newegg since most people seem to recommend them. How should I find a CPU and motherboard that will fit my budget since I don't really know what makes one better than the other : /? Obviously I'd want them to be the best possible while still allowing me to have money to build the rest of the computer like you mentioned before.

happy holidays everyone

This is where my advice ends. I don't really know enough about CPU's and Motherboards to be able to suggest anything. Basically what I did was I asked for a few suggestions from knowledgeable users here based on my budget, and then I researched them and looked at some benchmarks and prices.
