Need Help With Some Problems

Hi All

About a month ago I purchased two ATi HD6850's for crossfire on my sig rig...

Noticed no problems except for that now I couldnt hibernate Vista (well I could, but it wouldnt resume from Hibernation) which after much effort and research I discovered was a Vista problem rather than the cards.

However I have noticed a few more problems which I hope all you super intelligent beings can help me with:

- When crossfire is disabled Hibernation works, however with crossfire disabled sometimes coming from a full system boot (as in turn it on) windows fails to start (screen comes on but eventually just goes black) have to reset and it usually works the second time.
- When crossfire is enabled hibernation doesnt work (it wont resume out of hibernation) but turning the computer on works every time.

Those two are the random powering on/off problems... However Ive noticed these two problems also...

- With crossfire enabled in NTW I got this:
[YT]r-tu9eO_NWA[/YT]

and...

[YT]CV_BAjNkryw[/YT]
(this one being the random white things across the screen)
Both these problems stop when crossfire is disabled.

- The other day I was playing Borderlands with my mate, and with crossfire on and the game started fine, played fine for awhile and then randomly started distorting... I didnt record it sadly but basically horizontal lines of the displaying graphics appears on the screen sorta like this mock up I just did in paint:
mockupofproblem.jpg

So in the example the game is rendering a A lol but it has these random horizontal lines coming from it... Imagine that but with everything its displaying on screen.

Random Info You Might Want:
- I run both cards at 30% fan... Temps dont get above 75... CPU doesnt get above 46.
- Games run maxed out at 1680x1050

Any help in solving this would be greatly appreciated... They are both new so I can return if needed...

Thanks

More of the same problem... Crossfire enabled Supreme Commander 2...

This happened just now...

More of the same again... This time it almost looked like it was trying to do split screen multiplayer (you know like old games did back in the day)

Grrr... Ok now it is happening on every single game without fail... please I need some suggestions etc... Help!

Just did some random tests.

Took the cards out, then placed them in one at a time... Each time I booted up to windows and tested...

Both cards get around 7.5fps in gputool with no artifacts detected... Both cards also get 25.33 ish in GPU1 test in 3dmark Vantage...

So now Im really stumped as neither card is showing any difference... Are the numbers above normal for a single 6850???

One thing I noted is that one on of the cards it did the freeze upon windows loading thing where the screen goes blank and a reset is required...

Any ideas?

My mobo (Asus m4a79t deluxe) has the two main PCIE slots somewhat appart so I have to use the Asus Crossfire bridge provided as only it is long enough to reach the cards... So I cant test this at all sadly...

I dont know what else it could be... Ive had the rest of the PC for a while now (just over a year) with no problems like these at all...

It could be a power supply issue, or an overclocking instability. I had some artifacting and weird screen issues going on with my 6870 that were caused by an instability in my overclock somewhere, and not the card as I initially expected. It could also be that you've been running your power supply hard for a while on this set up and it's degrading fast. I'm lead to believe this because a single card worked fine initially. I can't say if your fps on the individual cards is right or not, I'm not familiar with those programs but since I'm pretty sure 3DMark Vantage is quite rough on your system, so ~25 fps on a 6850 is probably normal.

To see what your power supply's voltage is, try downloading Speedfan and/or HWmonitor. Check your voltages under load, and if they're under 11.75v, that may be your problem. ;)

My powersupply? Ok Ill give it a test... But its a corsair 650 which I was told was like the best one I could get at the time lol... Damn hope its not that as the problem since that cost me a bit here in NZ.

Ive got HWmonitor? What voltages am I looking at>

I have:
Under ASUSTek > Voltages= VIN1, +3.3V. +5V and VBAT
Under Radeon HD6850 > Voltages= VIN0

Which one am I looking at?

I dont overclock anything... Well except for my RAM maybe (the mobo says 1333, 1600(oc) in the manual... I have 1600 ram)

Hmm, it looks like your +12v voltage isn't there. :( That happens sometimes. Considering you have a 650w Corsair, you probably don't have a power supply issue anyway. It might be a GPU failure on one of your cards. You already tested each one separately, right? You might want to also try underclocking both cards while in crossfire. If it fixes the problem, I would guess that one of the cards is beginning to fail, and just can't handle crossfire anymore for some reason.

Ok Ill try that...

Im real confused... Cause I am getting the same 3dmark scores (when using each card separately and in crossfire) compared to the tests I ran when I first got them... But the GPUtool even in crossfire is only showing 7.4fps... And I know for a fact that crossfire used to get 64+ fps so thats is confusing the hell outta me...

I just tried speedfan... it has a +12V and a -12V is that what Im looking at?

Ok...

At idle in speedfan the +12V = 4.8v and the -12V = -3.97v

I then ran Prime and Furmark at the same time to totally max out my system...

And the voltages stayed the same? Well under 11.75v you said earier? Should I be concerned?

Its not that it's a bad power supply. In fact I second guessed myself after I saw what it was in your sig, but still, 650w might be cutting it a little close for a crossfire set-up, especially if its a little worn. Its worth ruling out anyway if nothing else. I'll assume you've updated your drivers and gotten rid of the old ones?

If its happening in IE, then its not the PSU as 2D graphics wont request the amps.

This looks like a driver issue.

Please do this:

1. Download latest drivers for your graphics card(s) and save to your desktop.
2. Uninstall current graphics card drivers (don't restart).
3. Use DriverSweeper to remove any left over files, http://downloads.guru3d.com/Guru3D---Driver-Sweeper-(Setup)_d1655.html#download
4. Install and run driver sweeper for ATi
5. Restart
6. Install dowloaded drivers.
7. Restart
8. Update directx http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3

Those are just bad ratings. Your PSU is probably fine. ;)
