Need new ram for Comp Persario, HELP!

Hi, I have a Compaq Persario (the number by the power switch is: SR1311NX).

I bought it for $200, so I figured it was a pretty good deal since it came with everything... the only thing is it only has 256MB of PC2700 DDR SDRAM...

I need to upgrade this, I don't play many games, it's just much too slow for operating a few programs at once..

Am I able to use PC3200 RAM in this? Or what should I do? Does anyone know how many slots it has for RAM? I'm looking for maybe at LEAST 512 MB, but I don't know... it says it has an AMD Sempron 3000+ (I think 2 Ghz?), anyone know about this?

Any help or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thank you to all who view.

Semper Fidelis,

I believe that that model had 3 slots in it, and was able to have 512 sticks in all the ports, but I might be wrong on that part. On the speed question, yes you will be able to use PC3200, but there's no need since the stick will just slow itself to the PC2700 speed of the board. So, I'd get a 256mb stick of PC2700, or a 512mb stick whatever floats your boat... :) You can check the number of slots yourself by opening the case and looking at the number of free slots next to the one that's already in there...

if you buy DDR400 ram it will prolly be slowed down to DDR333 unless you overclock..and just guessing i'd say you computer a 2 slots for ram..but to make sure just open it up and look...and the sempron 3000+ runs at 1.8 ghz...;)
EDIT: you beat me....lol

Ok, thanks, would 512 be pretty fast? Or should I go for two 512 chips and try to get a gig? would it make any difference with this processor? 1.8 is pretty slow huh?

Thanks!

So all I need to do is stick the 512 chip in? do I need to do any type of install other than taking off the case and stiking it in (like software or anything)?

Will the comp automatically know it's there?

Thanks!

If you can, get 1GB total (Although 512 should do the trick most of the time - aside for gaming). It will perform very well with ANY program/s you may want to run. As to the processor speed, 1.8Ghz Sempron 3000+ is a fast processor. The frequency (speed in Mhz) is different from that of Pentiums. This Sempron would, in my opinion, be comparable to a Pentium 4 2.8Ghz (although this is a rough estimate).

TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS ABOVE:

You do not need to install anything and your computer will automatically detect the extra RAM.

AWESOME, thanks for all of the help... I'm not sure what I'll do yet, but probably just get another 512... that is compatible with the 256, right? So then I'll have 768? is that how it works?

yea, say if you got a stick of 512mb DDR400 since the 256mb stick is in there the max speed would be DDR 333 (pc2700) , you can always get another 512mb stick if the 256 isnt enough;)

Yes

Although it is not clear whether your ram runs on 400Mhz (PC2700), one of your sticks is capable of it. Just get the 2700 as it is worth the minute extra you would pay for the 2100. The 2700 is always a wiser choice over a 2100 with the same qualities.

Check out at what frequency you are running at here:http://www.cpuid.org/cpuz.php#download

Ok, here's what everything says:
PRocessor:
AMD SEMPRON Core speed:1999.8Mhz, multiplier x12, FSB 166.6mhz, Bus speed 333.3 mhz, L1 data 64Kbytes, Level 2 512KB...

MEMORY:
running at 166.6 mhz, FSB : DDR 1:1...

If there's anything else I should put on here from that program just tell me...

Can anyone make some suggestions now?

Thanks!

EDIT:
I guess this comp only has 2 RAM slots, the program shows what's in slot 1/2...

nothing in 2, but 1 has my 256 DDR SDRAM (infineon)....

ANOTHER EDIT:

Dangit, now the program won't work, kinda... it worked the first time, and now it says a driver is missing, anyone know why? I re-installed it, still to no avail...

Hey

Well from the above stuff....I can see that yoor RAM is running at 333Mhz (166Mhz x 2). Just get PC2700 RAM and preferably the 512MB. Since you have 2 slots available that would be the wisest option. As to the program. Try extracting it into a new folder and running it there.

Isn't pc2700 = 333mhz and pc3200 = 400mhz , sounds like you said 2100 = 333mhz and 2700 = 400mhz

I dunno , i guess i could be wrong...

if you want to upgrade to 1 gig of ram in the future go with the faster ram. this way when you get the second 512 it would be at the faster speed.

Ok, cool, so What is the exact kind of 512 that I should use? the PC2700 DDR SDRAM???

Yes exactly that PC2700 DDR 333MHz, and go for value RAM too.... don't spend any more than you have too... If you buy 3200 or 400 MHz... it will run slower than it is supposed to... meaning you just wasted some 30-40 bucks. As for installation, first take out your other RAM and put the newer one in the first slot. There will be a notch in the underside of the RAM, and it will only fit ONE way, so get it lined up and push on the ends so it snaps in. It may be hard to snap in, so make sure it is lined up and push on the ends pretty good.

ok, so I can't leave the 256 in there? is that what you're saying? or can I have them both at the same time?

You can both in there... but put the 512 in the first slot and the 256 in the second.
