I needed some help picking out a CPU for a custom built system. I am still trying to decide weither or not I should AMD or Intel. I will be mostly using this computer to Multi-task and to play some games. (Some of those games could be hardcore games also)

well did u get a mobo? and did u buy anything yet? list all of ur parts so far and ur total budget, how much gaming is some? and hardcore like doom3?

Well lets see (This is Intel System)
CPU: P4 550 3.4 ghz - 383.99
Motherboard: Asus P5WD2-P - 391.99
CPU Fan: Ultra Fire - 33.99
Case: Ultra Mid T w/ X-connect 500 W PSU and 2 80mm fans - 101.99
Ram: Ultra Dual Channel PC4200 DDR2 (2 X 1024mb) - 269.99
Hard Drive: Seagate 250 GB SATA - 148.99
Optical Drive: Plextor PX-716SA - 175.99
Sound Card: Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2ZS - 85.99

Thats mostly the key parts since i havent decided on a GPU yet and if i figure AMD is better i would change the motherboard, cpu and cpu fan.

Ive read it already its just that ill be doing both multitasking and multimedia(Intel) and gaming(AMD) on this computer and i really need to figure out which would be better

EDIT: It wont be OCed much either though

either one would most likely be fine, i dont know how well amd performs at multi-tasking, but i know intel is good at gaming and multi-tasking. You could always go AMD 64 X2, but i think its out of your budget.

truthfully i dont think you will notice a major difference going either way.

They are both good for both. AMD is justa little better for gaming and intel is just a little better for multitasking.

If your going to do both, I don't think it much matters, I personlly would get a AMD, because I'm a fan, and I do more gaming then multi-tasking, but this is not your case. I would just buy the cheaper of the two your looking at.

with amd and gaming u will, i have, but with normal multitasking u dont, only intense multitasking like video editing, converting video/audio, all at the same time

also hawk, u can just wait a few weeks, the 3800 dual core is due out august 1st

Its not gonna be heavy multitasking but the amd seems to cost a bit more then the Intel cause when i worked it out it had only costed me about $2100 for most of the stuff and i really dont wanna spend too much for it
