Networking problem :(

Hi,

I have all my computers (or should I say had!) connected to each other using Ethernet. All the leads are going to a hub which is then connected to the internet.

The internet connection on all computers work fine. But when I go to setup the Network I get this error.

I search for the computer that I want to connect to and it finds it. I then double click on the computer to try and connect to the Transfers folder I have setup but I then get a Login box appear. The login box already has a Username filled in and its greyed out so I cant change it. The username is Guest. I have tried all the passwords I use in the password box but I can never get connected!

I have turned all the firewalls off etc so there should be no problems there. Its strange as up until about 4 months ago I was never asked for login details to connect to any of my computers. Is this some new feature in XP that may of been downloaded in the updates?

Can anyone help please :(

Many thanks
Joe

what version of XP do you have??

You are trying to view files on the PC, correct?

All OS are XP?

Hi,

The version is XP pro with SP3 (all computers) I have created a transfers folder where I can stick files etc I want to pass between computers.

I've never had this problem before and thought it maybe something to do with SP3 so I reformated all and put SP2 back on but it was still the same problem :(

Many thanks
Joe

Ah i know your problem and i learnt about it today! :D

  • Open up Windows Explorer
  • Tools
  • Folder Options
  • The "View" tab
  • Down the bottom make sure "Use Simple File Sharing (recommend)" make sure that is ticked.

I think when you use the simple networking you can only share the preshared folder that windows creates. I always uncheck the simple file sharing.
Basicaly sounds like you want a peer to peer network. What you need to do is create a user account that is different on each machine. So what happens when you try to access another pc accross the network. In a server scenario your credentials are authenticated by the server, so you may be asking I do not have a server, in that case your credentials must be already on each pc you want to access across the network. So not only do you need to create a log on account on your pc you must put that user name and password on each pc you want to log onto accross the network. You also have to have the same network name and ip address, except for the host part of the ip address.

now for the hub.... hubs are good in their place. They are not good connected to just a plain broadband modem. For one there is absolutely no internet protection, your front dooR is wide open. Second you may experience internet connection issues since hubs do not have NAT. If your broadband modem is also a router then the hub is ok.

Hi,

I have tried that thing with using the passwords etc...I shall try again to be sure but it didn't appear to work all i got was access denied please contact your administrator blah blah

I can't seem to get the login in box to change its username...Its allways stuck on guest

Thanks alot for your help

Joe
