New comp troubles, please help

Hey,
Been having troubles with my new set-up since the word go, my current problem is one I haven't come across before so I thought I'd ask for some more experienced help

Ok, so here goes:
When starting my comp, it boots into windows fine.
After a while (sometimes 5 minutes, sometimes 3 hours) the comp freezes and the HDD light stays on; well it "kinda" freezes, for instance i was about to watch a dvd in media centre when it froze. The menu kept playing (from what i assume was still in the RAM) but everything else is frozen.
Just the HDD light stays on.

I'm thinking it's my PSU again; I have it under pretty heavy load when you think about it only being 430w.

I have also had RAM problems which i "think" are unrelated but i might post about that on another thread (only running one stick atm, one appears to be damaged physically -from what the tests tell me anyway - Possibly caused by PSU power fluctuations????)

Comp specs are in my sig

Thanks for you help in advanced,

Derryn

EDIT: I forgot to mention my HDD's are both WD 160GB, the one running vista is SATA, the other has apps and media and is IDE.

EDIT2: I should also mention that the chipset gets quite hot quickly and after these freezes, the bios or windows doesnt show my Pioneer 212 SATA dvd burner (when you turn it off and on again it comes back) - another PSU prob???

it would be impossible for us to tell u if that is the "main problem" your having unless we got our hands on the PC ourselves....but you DEFINETLY need a better PSU

and i also agree wiht Jabes you should look into your CPU temps....random shut-offs are signs of an overheating CPU which could be caused by a poorly functioning Fan/Heatsync...so check that out immediately before your PC becomes uselss

it being "stock" makes no difference...it can still function poorly

and if u read it properly, u'd notice they aren't the regular "random shut-offs", in that the computer is actually working still ... i can move the mouse and things that are currently running continue to run

I'm positive it's not a temp prob

temps atm are:
sys:32 deg c
cpu: 37 deg c

that sounds pretty good I had a problem in xp that my computer would randomly shut down and then wen I switched over to vista it went away I thought it was overheating to but now I think it was cuz all my parts r 64 bit ready and I was running a 32 bit os

if you know everything y are u asking for help?

it's a suggestion, if u don't believe it's that u don't have to listen or respond to my posts...

so since u KNOW it's not the CPU...get a better PSU...

sorry I didn't mean to insult you, i appreciate your help.
I was hoping for another explination (yes i kno i need a new psu and im gettin one)
Like mabye the motherboard or somthin?
The bios says all power req's have been met.
Is it a known thing for a comp to behave like mine is due to a power deficiency prob??

IMO, it sounds like you need a better PSU. Running the 8800 GTS with an underperforming PSU will, in fact, cause your computer to freeze up. Remember, 400W is the minimum requirement. Your new PSU should be at least 500W, IMO. :)
