New CPU

Okay, I want a new CPU, but I dont want to upgrade anything BUT my CPU.

My current CPU is AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+

So I need a new Socket 939 compatible CPU. Preferably as fast as possible, I understand Intel Core Duo's are superior, but I aint got that kinda cash to build a new computer.

My reason: I own a pair of 7800GTXs in SLI configuration, and I feel they are being hindered by my CPU's power, or lack of.

I was thinking maybe this

You are currently at 2.4ghz with that model cpu. You can move upto a 2.6ghz X2 if you can't afford the $839.99 for the FX60 2.6ghz that will top the 939 boards. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103608

The lower priced Opteron 185 is the next lowest 2.6ghz dual core model seen for $423 at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103002

Currently the four models seen at newegg to move up just a little while the 4200+ X2 is a good OCer as well are seen at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...2820275+1050717007&Submit=ENE&SubCategory=343

No he isnt! he has the X2, which is at 2.0GHz.

I agree. Why would you want to uprade from a X2 3800.

Firstly, can you tell us what motherboard you have, so we can work out the potential for overclocking.

Also, as to bottlenecking, the CPU will only bottleneck at low resolutions, and low graphic settings. Once you start playing games on large monitors (which SLI-ed 7800GTX's is really designed for), and push the graphic settings up to max, then the graphic cards are bottlenecking.

Well, you have a decent motherboard, so no point in getting an Opteron 185 when you can get a Opty 165, or 3800 X2, for a lot cheaper. (The Opteron 165 is a bit more expensive than the 3800 X2, but will overclock a bit easier).

Firstly Id like to appologise to Strangehold, you are indeed correct.

Secondly I found my problem for the poor performance. I had earlier set my card to the SLI 16x AA setting and never took it off. This forced all my programs to do quality over performance. Which showed as slow FPS. So therefor, I wont be getting a new CPU, thanks anyways folks.

Also, I am curious as to HOW I would go about overclocking my CPU if interested. How overclockable is it?

The 4200+ X2 is the model known to be the OCer amongst the X2 line. The 3800+ X2 is just a good old basic work horse with the increased support for multitasking. It's not the gamers choice by any means. The FX line has the performers with the only dual core model being the FX60.

The 3800+ is not the gamer's choice there while it can be oced to some degree. The FX series was intended to be the performance line for gaming. But the only dual core model is the FX60. The sticky on which cpus are the best for ocing that is now quite outdated on choosing a good model for ocing can be looked over at http://www.computerforum.com/106902-post3.html

Dude, the X2 3800+ is the most common with gamers. That and the A64 3200+. Only the rich kids buy the FX series.

Take a look at all the gaming reviews for the X2 3800+, then the FX60.

true... mine is never mentioned :( anywho,.. there isnt a certain number people could give you for the overclock.. but i think you should be able to get it to 2.2GHz easely without putting up the Vcore :)
