New Laptop & SSD: How do I go about this?

im about to buy a new laptop and i want to get an SSD (256gb). not sure how i should go about doing this:

- before i turn it on, should i install the ssd? (if the windows 7 comes with a cd)

- even if my laptop comes with a windows 7 cd, should i just turn it on (without the ssd) and install windows, and then install ssd?

i know how to install an ssd, watched videos on youtube, very easy and takes 2-3min, im just not sure what i should do first.....

(if i install the windows 7 on the hdd (and only windows 7), i don't need to clone the drive since its just windows 7 right?).......i just want to make sure i know everything i have to before i go about this. i just want to know everything that i have to do before i start)

oh yeah, and samsung SSD that i will get will be 2.5", thats the right size? (all of the videos i've watched on youtube seems like the drives are a little bit bigger than 2.5". even the new videos)

this is the SSD i'm going to buy: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147164&name=Internal-SSD

You will have to boot to the hdd that is already in the laptop first. Then you should have the option to create system recovery cd's. Make the cd's and then boot put in the new ssd and use the recovery cd's to install windows 7 on the ssd drive.

Check to see if the laptop you want to buy has the option of ssd instead of hdd. That would save you the trouble. If that isn't an option then the recovery CD's or install software such as Macrium Reflect or Clonezilla that will allow you to clone the hdd to the ssd.

ok, i think i gotcha. how many cd's do you think i'll need? i have to go buy some... how long should it take to make these cd's?...........and after i finish installing a cd, will the screen tell me insert the "next" cd? (haven't done this before)

also, ive read another review on a different laptop saying that they needed drivers from a website....what are the chances that i will have to do that? (i think that was for a fresh install of windows 7 and not for recovery cd's)

looks like i'll have to make recovery cd's or use one of those programs and clone it....this is the laptop im about to purchase: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834131303&name=Laptops-Notebooks

If you use a dvd, you should only need one or at the max 2. The recovery cd's will reinstall all applications and drivers so it will be just like turning it on for the first time.

oh, i can use a dvdr/rw and not a cdr/rw?

what size should all of windows 7 home premium be?

also, should i just get a usb drive instead? which would be easier and faster?

should have asked this earlier, but how do i create recovery cd's exactly? is there just an option on windows 7 that i can just click on to create recoveries? (again, never did this before. sorry for all the questions)

Should be an option in the start menu to create the recovery cd's. Look under program menu for samsung since its a samsung laptop.

You will need to use cd or dvd. The program will tell you what to use.

Nope, thats not what you are wanting. You will either have 2 options. Use the program supplied on the laptop to create recovery cd's or call samsung and order the recovery cd's. If samsung supplies the program to create the cd's it will be listed under programs/samsung. Really can't give you any more information then that.

That's just a recover disc if Windows won't start. You can't use that to install Windows.

oh i see now, i knew something was not right when i saw the 140mb! it should def be in the user manual though right?

of course, before i do it i will post back in this thread so i have everything right...... how long does it take to make recovery cd's? and how long does it take to install them after i put the ssd in? (i know it may be more simple than i'm thinking now, but it'll def be worth it)

and i should def get dvd's to create the recovery cd's?

That will depend on how fast your drive can burn. It took me 4DVDs and about an hour or so to make them on a Acer laptop (5552 version).

As for how long, should be under an hour. The SSD will reinstall faster than a HDD.

ok, got ya. i was going to buy a 3-pack of dvdr's, but i'll pick up the 10-pack....

when i do this on samsung's program, after 1 dvd is filled, it will just stop and tell me to insert the next one right?

yep. When it finishes and verifies the first disk it will eject and ask for the next disk.

ok, makes sense, lol...i know this is supposed to be easy, im just a little paranoid that i have everything right. i was going to purchase my laptop tonight, but i have to wait til friday for my pay-check. so i should have it by next wed......say i have 3 dvd's total, ill install them when i boot the ssd in the same order i recorded them right? (can't wait to finally get a new pc and add this ssd!)

yes. You boot them in the same order yes. and be sure you mark them in some way to be sure you have the right order.

of course ill be marking them, thats the only thing im 100% sure of what to do for right now, lol! once i get the laptop in, ill be able to see how samsung's laptop is set up...really can't wait to do this, very pumped up!

wolfe, your fascist comment in your sig cracked me uppp! how do you like your 128gb SSD? i was thinking about buying a 128bg, but then figured i might as well go for the 256gb since im not getting an expensive laptop

It is not meant to be funny, but I guess it could be read that way.

Anyway, my 128GB SSD is just fine. The only increase most will see is boot time, and windows will hold you back there (coding kind of prohibits windows from instantly booting I find. 8-10 seconds is about as fast as you will boot on SATA3. Linux can reduce that to 2 seconds (plus POST time) on SATA2, and pretty much instant on SATA3). Anyway, the drive does what it is supposed to. Not much more. The 256GB will be fine for you probably. Any size will do the same thing pretty much.
