I finally built my first custom rig a few weeks ago, with parts i got for christmas, parts i had laying around and i bought the rest. I know its not the best for gaming, but what should i upgrade to make this a better gaming machine? Other than adding another gig of ram, Is the rest alright?
Here are my rig specs...
CPU: Intel Pentium D 805 Smithfield @ 2.66Ghz
MOBO: Gigabyte GA-965G-DS3
RAM: Corsair XMS2 1GB (2 x 512MB) DDR2 800
GPU: Asus 7600GS 256MB PCI-E x16 (461/922MHz)
DRIVE: Nec ND-3550A 16x DVD burner
SOUND: onboard sound & Virtual Reality Sound labs VRS 2.1C speaker system
HDD: Western Digital Caviar 320GB SATA 3.0GB/s
PSU: Antec SmartPower 2.0 450watt
CASE: Aspire X-Plorer black/blue steel mid tower atx

1GB is fine for now, I would upgrade to an E6300 once you have the money. The 805 is a pretty bad gaming processor, especially since to most games, it performs exactly like a Pentium 4 2.66Ghz processor with a 533Mhz FSB.

So a E6300 is better than the Pentium D 805 even though the pentium d is like .8GHz higher? Would games that recommend say a 2GHz cpu work fine on a E6300 even though its only 1.86GHz? What makes it faster other then the fact that the FSB is twice as much, or is that the only reason its better?

the 7600gs isn't that great of a card. go with the 7600gt or maybe a 7800gt or 7900gt. 1gb of ram is fine but 2gb won't hurt if you can afford it.

The E6300 would be at least twice as fast, most likely more. I dont feel like going into a long explanation, but the Core 2 Duo @ 1.83 is much, much faster then the Pentium D 2.66.

Why in the world would you upgrade from a 7600GS to a 7600GT? Thats the useless upgrade. Now a 7900GT I can see, but I know he just got the 7600GS anyways.

You would notice the biggest difference getting a Core 2 Duo.

By anychance you know any sites that explain why? I wanna learn why there much much better. :D

In a nutshell they have shorter pipelines, so they dont have to run as fast to reach from one end to another. Think of it like a highway. The Core 2 Duo's are like a 2-mile highway and the Pentium D's are like a 5-mile highway, which has to travel at a much faster speed to reach the end then the Core 2 Duo does.

Is that what the Manufacturing Tech is basically? the 65nm to the 90nm or is that something else?
No thats something different, because even the newer Pentium 4's and Pentium D's are 65nm, which is what the Core 2 Duo's are.

The main reason why the C2D's perform better than a Pentium D or P4 is the pipelines, like omega said, they do more per clock cycle so speed is irrelevant. But they are a superior processor I have on and it doesnt miss a beat on any of the games I play.

What games do you play?

If you are not satisfied with the graphic quality get a better card, I would than upgrade RAM and most likely do processor last. Most games which concern heavy graphics need processing power from a video card and thats what the game will utilize. You will not see difference in quality of graphics between a Pentium D and an E6300, but if you upgrade to a 7900 or an ati equivalent I guarantee you will be more satisfied. Also, 2 gigs of RAM would make you machine a beast. But trust me, if eye candy is what you desire, GPU-RAM-CPU in that order as far as upgrading.

I was kinda thinkg a better GPU first to, but is a Pentium D 805 a good enough CPU for gaming or not really? Currently i play games like Far Cry, Gun, Doom 3 but i'm lookin to get Fear, Half Life 2, and Counter strike source. You think the 805 would be a good enough CPU for now?

Would upgrading from a 16" CRT monitor to an 19" LCD increase image quality? Other than using a higer resolution on the 19" LCD would it increase quality?
