hey guys....recently i turned on my computer...and when i logged into windows xp...a message popped up saying something about a file and after i logged in...i dont have a desktop!! all my icons are gone, i can't call up the start button, but i still have a functioning computer...meaning i can do ctr+alt+del and call up task manager but i can't access any of my files...how do i fix it?

hey thanx for helping out brianmay...but when i typed that in...it says this application has failed to start because WININET.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem...so what does that mean....and do i have to reinstall windows?

um...i can't find the file...how do i find the file when i can't access the start menu? nothing responds except ctr+alt+del? is there another way to find files?

well it looks like a file got deleted. You may have to put the windows cd in and go to the repair console. Do you have a windows cd that you can use?

you can always access cmd, i just dont see the point, it says it is not in the spot it should be so it is not there, unless you have something else he can use it for, else.. ctrl alt del new process and cmd

edit: yes as long as the operating systems match up. so if it is windows xp pro, the disk has to be windows xp prp

You can change user accounts via the cmd. And even if he doesnt have to he can enter some stuff to become the system user.

Try to reboot trough Safe Mode. You do that by rebooting and toggle on the F8 button right in the start. Then, if you are in windows, try to chekc your HDD for errors.

ho wdo i use the last known good configuration? and i tried using the xp cd to repair my system but it seems really complicated...it gives me the dos command prompts...so i dont really know how to fix it....if anyone can give me a step by step that will be great...i'm missing the file WININET.dll

When your computer starts up Hit F8 or which ever key it is on your computer, Select boot in safe mode or last known working condiguration. Simple and easy.

i tried booting in safe mode and also booting from the last known working configuration, i still get no desktop...if anyone else has any suggestions...please i want my computer to be working!!

This is what I'd do if I were in your shoes. Open the CD drawer, put in the Windows disc, shut down, then restart the pc. When it asks what you want to do, select repair.
