Noob First build

I've been thinking of building my own computer and just bought the parts during a boxing day sale at a local computer store.

I just have a few questions about where to connect things.

I have an Antec three hundred case and I'm not sure where to connect the case fan. On my mobo or on the power supply?

MOBO: Gigabyte 890 GPA-UD3H

PSU Thermaltake TR2 RX 650 watts

I also read in the mobo manuel that I have to plug my optical drive in the CD in on my mobo. Why is that? I didn't receive any cables with my optical drive.

I'm also not sure which connector to use to power my HDD I have a WD 2Tb Caviar green if that's of any importance.

I want to get a second WD 2Tb Caviar green drive how would I setup RAID 1 how would I do this?

Right now my computer is just an oversized door stopper. :(

The optical drive cable comes with your MoBo... it'll be flat and about a cm wide. The power to your HDD will be coming from your powersupply, it will be a long narrow plug that won't fit anywhere except your HDD. You will need another of those flat cables (Sata) to run from the HDD to your mother board.
Search Youtube for 'Sata HDD Install' and 'Sata optical drive install'. You'll be fine ;)
Actually the sata power cable plug to the hdd looks the same as for the hdd and other sata powered parts. The cable from the psu will have 2 or 3 of those plugs on 1 cable.

Check your motherbaord manual to see if it says to put the optical sata data cable in a peticular sata port(they will be numbered). Generally port 1 is a good place for the c drive and the optical on a last port//leaving the others(2-3-4-5) for other hdd's etc. I have my c ssd on 1, anther ssd on 2 as B, a hdd on 4 as D & E, and im putting in a 3rd ssd and it will be in port 3 as A. So you can have your drives aranged on the data ports, and assign letters to them, that's handy for you to remember.

Nice mb, I have the Asus equivelent.

it's the port to the far right. Do you know how I would connect my fans?

Edited the post.

And if OP is talking about the port to the far right of the HDD, the 8 pins, you don't need that anymore. It's an Old School connection. The power to your HDD is to the left. There are 2 slender L shapes, the L shape on the left will fit your power connection, and the L shape on the right will fit your Sata information connector.

It will be that same configuration on the back of your DVD drive. I'd forgotten those for Sata power, but Benny caught it.

Since you have modular, the power cable is plugged into the ps, and that cable will have the required fan plug. That cable/connector is called Molex.

Thanks for the clarification Bill

the molex cable is at the end of my fan I have to plug it into my PSU but what type of connector on my PSU?

Your psu will come with cables detached. Those cables plug into the psu. On the other end of those cables are the connectors. Some cables will have sata power connectors and some will have molex connectors,,,like that!

edit: You'll see that the cables will fit in the psu by their shape.

I just connected the molex connectors to the PSU and plugged the power cord and turned the PSU on. I pushed the power button on my case and I get this message.

"Finding Operating System
Boot from CD/DVD
Press any key to access Xpress 2 Recovery"

Xpress 2 recovery the loads and I get Error 500 " IDE drive doesn't exist or all primay partitions are occupied."

After that my CD drive opens then closes seconds later and the loop starts over. HELP!
I only have SATA peripherals right now.

Have you actually installed the operating system? Where are you on the build, are the hard drives and all of the hardware installed?

I just finished installing the hardware. this happens when I try and setup the BIOS

I read about disabling the IDE drive should I do this?
