I couldn't be without AVG for long! :P I tried Avast and found it was good as an antiphising filter only. Too bad Microsoft threw that into IE 7. AVG is one that actually catches many things and ties up less resources. :D

I've been using Avast for over 2 years without any problems. Now that I'm dual booting XP and Vista , I thought about trying AVG on my Vista partition and leave Avast on the XP partition. If it would not cause any problems I could possibly have two defenses.

I run AVG 7.5 the actual latest build since 7.1 is "old news" for sure like 2005 1/2-2006. AVG will go right on Vista like it will XP. Someone looked up a real old PC World article to see 7.1 at this time. :P

One thing most do not know about dual booting Vista with any older version is the loss of the system restore feature. That's one reason why Vista and XP were installed each as stand alone OSs here.

So your saying the system restore does not work when you have Xp on one partition and vista on another? I'm just trying to understand if that's what you meant correct me if I 'm wrong. I very rarely use the system restore, mainly because I use Acronis True Image back up and keep a current back up on my external drive.

The report on this was seen by one MS MVP as well as in articles on dual booting XP along with Vista looked over lately. The MVP report on this is seen at http://bertk.mvps.org/html/dualboot.html A second MVP blog is found at http://www.lockergnome.com/nexus/bl...stem-restore-to-keep-restore-points-in-vista/

There are a few other references also pointing to this problem being seen when dual booting the two versions. One of those is seen at Microsoft. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926185

The one feature that gives a big advantage over running XP with 3rd party programs like Acronis is seen in Vista with the new backup feature included in it. You can backup anything on your entire drive into an archive on another with it. If you have to reinstall Vista you simply restore the archive you created earlier.

I prefer Avast, but AVG uses less resources. AVG has one of the crappiest interfaces of any software I ever used, though. Avast has more features and is more customizable.

AVG is m0nk3ys1ms' antivirus software of choice. I like Avast, but I find myself installing AVG on my own PC's as well as the PC's I work on.

let me add some fuel to the fire, i hate AVG to death
reason 1: manual update don't work, tried and tested, sorry
reason 2: Our network has a Proxy server, and it always ask username/password,even if you've provided it, really a pain.
reason 3 : i just hate it

Avast :
Ive used Avast only once, overall its good but it's too complex, way too many options !!, better than AVG

Norton:
Never liked norton, but 2007 prooved me wrong, though i use NOD, i do secondary scans on drives using 2007, this version is not as resource hungry as 2006 and 2005, too bad you ppl don't see that

cheers - thats my personal opinion, you can debate it if you like

yay somebody agrees that norton is good :D

Someone simply didn't learn how to use the update button apparently. :P Just about every time I click on that Grisoft has another update ready to go on. Norton still probably has it's typical resource hogging design. So don't get too comfortable with it. Also a network has a firewall that has to allow for the AVG updates to come through.

Norton, was good for protecting me, but far too slow, and a resource hog!

Got AVG when I built my computer, never looked back, it's awesome! :D

I used it here for years since dumping McAFee and later Symantec System Works with Norton bought retail. Ever since I've heard nothing but complaint after complaint when people have run into problems with the later versions. Kaspersky is another one that many favor while turning away from Norton for sure!

I use AVG and I've only had a minor trouble with it. That trouble was when ever I left my PC on overnight to download big files the autoscan would start up at a certain time and caused a BSOD. This is probably my other hard dries problem when your doing a couple of things to the same folder it gives me a BSOD. Mind you I use the Ext 3 filesystem on the HDD and the drivers a bit messed up... I turned off the autoscan and now nothing has ever happened bad since. Because of this I lost 3 hours work on a CS map I was making. That Hard Drive is old and cheap though. So I guess you get what you pay for. I still use AVG and have never even thought about leaving it.
