here are the specs of the 8600
8600 Ultra
64 shader
500 core
1400 memory mhz
<512mb
256bit buss
$179 price

do you think 2 sli 8600 is equavelent 2 1 8800gtx

is 1 8600 ultra better then a 7900gt or equavilent does any one now

No one knows since they arent released yet, wait until they are released before assuming how the 8600 will perform.

But IMO, the 8600Ultra will be better then an 8800GTX, but I would go with a single 8800GTX because it has more memory capacity, and not all games utilize SLI to its full potential.

i think he means combined.. I don't know if it works like that though. And fyi i believe the $180 ultra will be 256mb. If there is a 512 it'll be considerably higher priced.. pfft, not worth it in my opinion.

SLI doesnt work like that, since it stores the same identical textures on both cards, so you still only would have 512MB of VRAM.

I thought so. And yes the gts is better, if you have the extra dough go with that one.

ah that's bull.. companies do stuff like that to make you think you're getting more than you are.. Does that really surprise anyone?

It doesnt add up, Alienware probably wants to make it more appealing.

The same textures are stored in both cards, so you still only have 512MB of VRAM.

Are you sure you're not talking about the 7950GX2 which has 1GB of RAM?

SLI isn't that wonderful to be able to just add the two together and enjoy. Sorry. Some games will see little if any improvement, yet there are a few games out there that you can see ALOT of improvement in SLI. Honestly, why not just buy 1 8600 or whatever DX10 card you can get when they release at that price (ATI's will be here relatively soon), and be happy with that while saving up to buy a later redesign of the core or something. Honestly, An 8600Ultra is going to be a pretty damn sweet card!

In my opinion, given the stats that were released for the 8600, a single 8800GTX would out-do 2 8600 Ultras. Given more shaders and alot more memory. 2 SLi 8600s = 512mb (or 1gb, not sure yet, that hasnt been exactly clearified to my knowledge), 256-bit memory, 128 shaders. Single 8800GTX = 768mb 384-bit memory, 128 shaders. Well, as you see it looks to me close to an equal match. But your memory buss shouldnt change with SLi, so the 2 8600s would most likely have a much lower memory bandwidth, and that would slow them down.

To me the single 8800GTX would be a much wiser choice, as it would leave room for maybe someday buying another one and then having 2 8800GTXs. That and it will be a high end card for some time, the 8600s will eventually not be good enough to keep up. The single 8800GTX would be able to keep up with upcoming games much longer.

Also, the single 8800GTX would consume alot less power.

Im not sure how SLi exactly works, but im pretty sure it hasnt been completely worked out yet to be an effective gamer upgrade. Unless perhaps your using lower end cards like the famous 6600GT or Ultra SLi. I also am pretty sure that SLi can cause game instability as its not very reliable. From what i hear. I dont think i would trust SLi, i think its better to get the single best card then 2 of the lower end models.

lol well of course. There isnt ALOT of difference between GTX and GTS other then memory bandwidth and size, which isnt much compared to the lower end cards. Unless your talking about the 320mb GTSs that have currently been released. Even those, probibly.
