Oil Computer, for those who know a bit about it.

I would never use vegetable oil (or any cooking oil) since it looks pretty disgusting, and it smells bas and can rot easily. I would use motor oil, or some type of clear oil.
 
Hmm i was thinking of doing the same thing. I was just wondering how would you keep the oil "chilled", or cool it? Just like a fan blowing over the top of the oil? I also hear of people putting a tank of oil in there refrigerator and have a pump pumping coo/hot oil to and from each tank.

It would be eaiser to just buy a Aqauirm chiller.

That is the point :P has been done many times. Not doing it to my main computer (The one in my sig) doing it to an old Compaq Presario with a Pentium 1 200mhz processor, 32mb of ram and a 3GB HD. It's just sitting in a box collecting dust.. so why not have some fun with it?

As for the oil in transformers, well, that would work.. but you will need close to $500 for a gallon of transformer oil. Plus I think the company would wonder why a resident is ordering such a thing lol.

btw, i know I would have to clean off the dust on everything, any suggestions how I would clean the motherboard and other components? I've heard some really wierd ones such as sticking it in the dishwasher... which does not seem to be a good idea to me. As for the case, I would just strip it down and power wash it.

EDIT:

Motoxrdude, to keep the oil cool, you have to keep it moving. Put fans in or some pump. I probably would recommend a pump since I guess fans after a while would burn out since the motor would have more stress trying to turn the fan in oil. I will probably put in some high quality fans in anyway.

also if you did have a sealed case, since hot air rises, so would oil, so if you made a very tall case, the warm oil would go to the top, cool and go back to the components(convection). The only thing that concerns me is the cpu. It said on Toms hardware guide, that you have to seal the CPU bay.


EDIT: I just thought on how you would get a fan to circulate oil is to take off some of the fins so it would look something like this(I did this in MS paint real fast)

I dont thinkit would be that rgeat an uidea to run fans in it, it wouldn't muhc much oil anyway's compared to air.

I agree, not to mention that its giong to try to spin at several thousands RPM's, when it will only be able to spin slowly. From what i've read, the oil stays pretty cool but when its under load for several hours, the oil starts to heat up. But they say that it doesnt get extremely hot.
 
Aaah, I didn't know about sealing the CPU, good thing you pointed that out.

My plan is before i start spending money to modify the case, is to put the hardware in a plastic container filled with the oil and make sure it's stable, if all goes well then i'll start working on it. Course, I will take pictures along the way.

I'll put a fan into the oil and monitor it's rpm change when it's out of the oil and in the oil... see what happens.

Also will have to seal the power supply from the oil... power supply will be blowing in air so it will end up sucking in dust. Can't submurge the power supply since it will be at the top of the case and the CD drive and hard drive have to be mounted at the top of the case.
 
Yea i was just planning on buying a medium sized container, maybe 8-15 gallons. Im still debating on the oil to use, vegy oil is more accesible/clear, but i heard motor oil is better for cooling/doesnt go bad. How much would you think 5 gallons of motor oil and vegatable oil would cost?
 
Motor oil and vegetable oil is very cheap.. no more than $10. I would not use either really. Motor oil does work better but it's too dark, and you won't be able to see anything. Probably smells too... I was going to go with vege oil but after reading it can go bad and is hard to clean up, i just switched to mineral oil. It's clear and does not rot. No clue how much it costs yet.

I would try a decent synthetic hydraulic fluid like brake fluid or transmission fluid. The latter is designed to handle heat. Either is less viscous than motor oil and therefore would circulate better.

A guaranteed circulation device would be an electric oil pump-- they used to sell those for automobiles, I don't doubt you could still find them online.
 
LOL, gasoline. If Desiel fluid isnt condeuctive you could use that because it doesnt ignite. You could take a flame over it and it wouldnt go up in flames.

I have ALOT of transmission fluid around my house, i need to get a CPU then i will try it.

Actually gasoline would not ignite. Liquid gasoline is not flamible. Gas vapor is. So if the computer was in a sealed container, you could spark all you want as long as the spark was not exposed to any oxygen.
 
its pretty hard to extract all of the oxygen from a sealed unit without the right chemicals and i dont think anyone would want any gasoline inside their house like that. also, gasoline can ignite from any flame at a temp of -45 degrees C. now i've seen diesel being used to put out a burning rag but its not an experiment i'd want to try out.
generally speaking all "oily liquids" have a bad smell accociated with them but heavy oils dont produce vapour so well so its harder to smell.
