opteron?

I was wondering what the difference between the toledo and opteron processors are?

Because I feel like going cheaper for a dual core opteron and just overclock it to fx60 speeds

is opteron just as good?

Opterons are generally meant to be used for servers/workstations, and are generally put through more rigorous stability tests than the Athlon 64's, as they are going to be used for more important tasks.

In some cases, the Opterons are amazing overclockers (just look at the Opteron 146 CABNE stepping, a bunch of people got those past 3GHz). Yet, in some cases they aren't as good of overclockers, as it really depends what chip you get.

As for an Opteron to reccomend, I reccomend the Opteron 170, as that will get you to FX-60 speeds with relative ease (bringing into account you have a relatively high-end motherboard), and possibly even FX-62 speeds with a little bit of luck.

That's cool. The Opteron 165 is still a relatively solid choice, as you should be able to overclock pretty well with that chip.

Yes, they are good for gaming, as the Athlon 64 and the Opteron both have the same K8 architecture.

For example the Opteron 148 is basically the same as the FX-51 CPU, the FX-51 which was considered the best CPU for quite a while when it was released.

The Opteron 165 model is the OCer's choice there for gaming as well as cranking things up. I hear this often while taking a serious look at the 185 for the next build here to run a stable 2.6ghz cpu for multitasking where background services and apps alike will be able to run while gaming or running video capture devices. But I'm after the higher default not OCed speeds there. For a good work horse type case the Opterons are the ones to look at. And the prices will be seeing a good drop very shortly when the new Intel model comes out.

Well, the Opteron 148 has a 2000MHz HTT, meanwhile the old FX-51 had a 1600MHz HTT, which can alter performance a bit.

Ok, I guess that solves most of my questions

But I suppose I have to use a servermotherboard for opteron?
Or can I use my a8n sli premium

Socket 939 Opterons will work perfectly fine with your motherboard.

In a few weeks you will probably see the price on those go down along with the FX dual cored models. If you have the time to wait save some cash.
