Hi guys, I'm new here. Sorry if I ask about the homework because it's hard to find in the textbook.
I have thesis to be done this week.
Hope you might help.
Explain the following:
a.) Probelms minimized by the introduction of offline peripherals.
b.) Problems created by the introduction of offline peripherals.
c.) How spooling help in balancing the use of the CPU and I/O devices.

The table below gives the input, compute, and output times for three jobs submitted to a spooling system:
job 1 job 2 job 3
input 5 3 4
compute 3 1 2
output 2 2 3

a.) What sequence of processing maximizes the total time to run the three, asuming that the order of input determines the order of processing and the order of output?
b.) Can the order in (a) be improved if the jobs may be processed and output in a sequence other than the one in which they are input? If so, how? If not, why?
c.) What is the best that can possibly be achieved if the jobs are input in the order Job 1, Job 2, Job 3?
d.) Answer (a),(b),(c) with the criterion of minimizing the average turn aorund time for the batch of jobs!

Spooling stands for simultaneous peripheral operations on-line, spooling refers to putting jobs in a buffer, a special area in memory or on a disk where a device can access them when it is ready. Spooling is useful because devices access data at different rates. The buffer provides a waiting station where data can rest while the slower device catches up.

The term I/O is used to describe any program, operation or device that transfers data to or from a computer and to or from a peripheral device. A peripheral device is
a computer device, such as a CD-ROM drive or printer, that is not part of the essential computer, i.e., the memory and microprocessor. Peripheral devices can be external such as a mouse, keyboard, printer, monitor, external Zip drive or scanner, or internal, such as a CD-ROM drive, CD-R drive or internal modem. Internal peripheral devices are often referred to as integrated peripherals

So if you are too lazy to look up the answer in the notebook i am to lazy to type :)
Workit out and search for the other answers on google!

why cant you answer the question by reading the book? ask the teacher for help if it is so difficult

Well in the book explain about peripheral device, it didn't mentioned about how to minimize or maximize.
For the spooling job system, it didn't mentioned how to perform this job.
I don't have notebook and the teacher never discuss about the spooling system. That's why I have to study by my own. Since this topic never been discussed and just rely on the book that was used and I still busy with my thesis, that's why I have a hard time to answer it.
That's why I hope that you can give at least a clue for answering this.
Thank you.
