PC Crashing on Boot

Hi,

My Dell PC just starting crashing on boot up and I have a hunch it might be the video driver. It seems that it started happening once I installed the new Nvidia drivers for my Geforce GTX 660 but this could be coincidence. Sometime it wont even get into the boot process far enough to choose safe mode but if it does the PC boots up without issue.

I know a little a computers but not enough to fix this, any help would be appreciated. Also, I,ve searched here for several hours but could not find an issue familiar to mine. I am not getting the blue screen of death but rather just not booting at all or when it does it starts up but only to crash with screen turning black as if it were turned off. The PC seems to keep running without video.

If you can't boot far enough to even access safe mode options then its not the driver because the driver hasn't loaded yet. What I would do is remove and reinsert the video card and see if that helps any. If not, there is another issue somewhere.

Sometimes it will get that far, sometimes it wont crash until windows is completely loaded. It seems completely random. Is there any other items I can check as I currently have it booted is safe mode.

Rebooting usually means hardware issue of some kind. If it was shutting off completely then it would be an overheating issue, but its not. As I suggested before, just remove and reinsert video card. Wouldn't hurt to do the memory or any other hardware attached to system. For grins and giggles you might want to do a system restore to before the driver update and see if things get better. Who knows.

OK, doing the system restore now, does this mean that I'm going to loose purchased Norton 360 that I just downloaded two days ago.

You probably created an account with Norton, and your anti virus subscription is probably tied to that. So probably not.

Your right I did, and now that I think of it, it was around the same time I did the video driver update as well. Could it be Norton causing this. I had it all along but for some reason it stopped working and I called Norton support and they did an update for me.

Something hardware related is causing your issue, not software. Since it is rebooting before windows even loads then its a hardware issue. I would say try updating your bios but since your system isn't stable, then don't even try it.

Well I done the system restore and so far so good. I shut it down and rebooted no problem. Now I just have to retrieve my Norton that I just updated. Like I said before, it almost seemed like I was loosing my video, the PC stayed running, it didn't make any sounds as if it were shutting down which is why I suspected the video card/driver. So maybe my initial description was a little misleading, maybe it wasn't a system crash but a video card crash. I wont say its fixed yet but it did start up for the first time today without issues since doing the restore. I did the restore back to just before I did the video driver update.

Ok, keep us updated.

Well, problem is back again but now I'm getting to the windows screen every time then it crashes and occasionally I get a blue screen explaining something about windows is shutting down to protect itself. It also mentions something about removing new software or hardware installed recently. What I don't understand is why I got about 5 to 6 good starts on this thing now issues again.

Once again any help would be appreciated. This thing is soone going to the curb except my video card.

What is the make and model of your power supply?

Its the factory dell, not sure if that helps. My PC is an Studio 540, Q8300 processor, 6G of Ram, running Vista 64.

Also, see below for blue screen view dump. If I reading that correctly my last crash was Jan 5th of this year. So does this mean the PC is not actually crashing when this happens.

According to that, January 5th was the last recorded crash and was due to either video card issue or driver issue. There were 2 more related to the same issue. This could be from a bad video card. Can you try using a different one and see if the system reboots? Also, have you checked event viewer for any errors?

That date cooresponds to when my old video card failed and I then replaced it with the GTX 660 which has been running fine ever since. So why did it not record the latest crashes, I did get the blue screen as I described earlier.

Also, where do I find the event viewer.

Ok, found the event viewer and there are alot of errors but not sure whats significant. I guess I should be looking around dates when the crash occured.

Ok, another bit of info. The PC also crashes starting it in safe mode with networking but never yet crashed in safe mode without networking. Whats the difference in the two.

With networking means you will have internet. Without networking means you won't have internet.

Install your chipset drivers in safe mode without networking. Also, that PSU is probably insufficient for a GTX660.
