Have you ran cleaup programs such as:

CCleaner
Auslogics Disk Defrag
Auslogics Registry Cleaner

They will cleanup old and unnecessary files on your system, and will give you a general increase in performance.

no i havent, but i will now

i also think its worth mentioning that this pc has never had proboblems sine the day i built it. I installed my new vid card on xmas and it ran fine for the first 2 days but then yesterday (12/27) it started freezing when my mom was using itunes to put music on her ipod

i ran all three of those...after i did CCleaner it froze up again twice...then i did the registry cleaner and finally the defrag...I'll have to check tonight to see if it freezes up any more since i have to head to work now

thats kinda what i was thinking next if this doesn't work. I guess i don't really have anything to lose, just the time to reinstall games and what not. Last time i installed WoW it took several hours to download all of the patches and what not..

i will if i have to do it.

Uninstall Viewpoint

In ccleaner startup disable the following

- ctfmon
- Quick Task
- NvMediaCenter

Oh and get rid of Frostwire

I tried doing a search on the event log but apparently I have no program to open it with so I couldn't view it. Any help withthis would Be great as this is all new to me.

I'll disable those startup programs when I have acess to the machine. And is there anything I can use in place of frostwire or just rid of those programs altogether?

Thanks

Alright, I got rid of frostwire, and stopped those programs on startup. Still freezin up.

I guess i should add that i installed my video card xmas day. I didnt have the problem until 2 days after that, so i don't know if the problem could be associated with the video card or not.

any other ideas?? im gettin ready to reformat, as much as i don't want to

EDIT: another thing i could mention is that i notice on this website that my computer isnt loading the small button "images" until i scroll my mouse over where it should be. Instead of the image its just the text explaining what it is.

Open up task manager and see what is using the most resources. Better yet download and install Process Explorer

task manager says that cpu usage is about 99% system idle

MEM usage is:
firefox.exe - 95, xxx K
svchost. exe - 29, xxx K
explorer.exe 23,xxx K
services.exe 23,xxx K
RTHDCPL. exe 21, xxx K

everything is just less and less

to acess event viewer,
right click my computer
manage
choose event viewer
see the critical and errors
if u see any there let us know
(write the exact error as there)

-Check the disk for errors using both options--->"Automatically fix file system errors" and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors"...(After this process is complete, your computer should restart automatically. If not, restart it manually)...
-After that defragment your disk.(I know you did it already, but now do it again. After the defragmentation process is complete, restart your computer)...
-Scan your computer inside of the SAFE MODE with the McAfee Virus Scan Enterprise+McAfee AntiSpyware...(BE SURE TO CONFIGURE THE MCAFEE PROPERLY OTHERWISE IF YOU JUST INSTALL IT AND SCAN YOUR COMPUTER,IT WONT FIND MANY BAD THINGS)!!!(After the scanning process is finished, delete ALL the items from the QUARANTINE folder. After that restart your computer into NORMAL MODE again)...
-Clean your registry using the program called "Eusing Free Registry Cleaner 2.0" or newer version...(After that, restart your computer)...

Cheers!

In the event viewer i go into the system and see a couple errors that are all the same error:

The MCSTRM service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

I also have some warnings in the system log:

TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

The only other error i get is in the application tab of the event viewer:

The performance strings in the Performance registry value is corrupted when process Performance extension counter provider. BaseIndex value from Performance registry is the first DWORD in Data section, LastCounter value is the second DWORD in Data section, and LastHelp value is the third DWORD in Data section.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

^^This error seems to happen in pairs

STARS i will follow the directions you left shortly and post with any news

thanks for all the help so far

I think u should try uninstall any anti-virus in that pc,
download an Kaspersky Internet security installer.
activate it with trial key o 30 days ,update it and run a full scan.
After he cleans the computer, if he stills unstable run the recovery from
XP cd.

Because looks like u have some virus that took over your system files,
and after u remove them the original files probably arent there.
But give it a try with kaspersky and tell us how it was..
