PC vs. AMD APU in Next Gen Consoles

How does PC plan on keeping up with next gen consoles in term of memory usage? I understand that a octacore 4.0ghz pc cpu will outperform a PS4 cpu 2:1, but how do pc component manufactures plan on keeping up with 8GB of shared GGDR5 memory? Essentially PS4's could utilize 7GB of that shared RAM into GPU memory. To my knowledge, GPU RAM doesn't exceed 6GB on commercial video cards, which still cost over a grand. Is this the first time we may see consoles out performing desktop PC's in terms of texture rendering?

8gb is easy and gddr5 is actually less reliable than ddr3, which is why microsoft has ddr3 in the xbox one.

And there is absolutely no reason for so much vram, just plain and simple, no game will need that much for a very long time

Pretty sure the Xbox One and the PS4 won't be out-performing gaming PCs in terms of anything...

VRam doesn't mean a thing above 6 GB right now. 6 GB will work fine on 4K, 4 GB for 1600, 3 GB for 1440, 2 or even 1 gb for 1080p. I could have a 7750 wil 50000 GB of VRam but it would still be worse then a 7770 at 1080p. And I hear the Xbox one will have around 7790 power, and the PS4 a 7870 or 7850. So the 780 is the best card out right now and it destroys the 7870 and it was released before the consoles are even out!

You my good sir, have just opened a can of worms.

Yeah my graphics card that I bought last year is supposed to be about on par with the graphics capabilities of consoles coming out later this year. So yeah... That pretty much sums it up.

Dont forget, yours is the 4th fastest card from AMD, not counting the 680/70/60ti/60, so it's around the 7/8th fasest of the current (soon to be last) gen cards and that's not counting the newer released 7990 or 690 or GTX Titan either.

Fair enough. So would I be future proofed for a while with an AMD Phenom II X6 2.8Ghz, or should I invest into something a bit beefier like a a10 4Ghz or an 8core 4Ghz?

Phenom II X6 isn't that great, it's not bad, but some PC games will be held back by it. You can't really use console specs to justify what a gaming computer should be. The way the code is handled is different for each so it doesn't equate to the same kind of comparison. Are you wanting to upgrade what you have now?

When you say '8core 4Ghz' I assume you're talking about the FX-8320. In which case, yes, go for the 8320 over the X6.
