Ok,
My grandparents old eMachines 150DVD had pretty much expired and we went into PC World in Warrington to get a new one. We actually managed to find a very nice E6400-based machine with 2GB of RAM, 300GB HDD and a Radeon 1300, which is more than what they needed for about £530, however the cheeky salesman tried to sell us a Pentium D system for more moolah!
These stores will try and find a system to suit your needs, or so they claim. This PC had been taken home and had the box opened, no more. He then continued to go on about how there may be a risk involved in buying it as opposed to buying a new one!
One thing that actually upset me was the fact he suggested that they some back when they're alone, as they don't know much about computers it was horrifying for such a big store to suggest something like this. I think it was prbably to do with the fact that I was able to combat him in just about everything.
Moral: Stay away from stores like PC World...
