PCI-Express x16

Hi there. I was using the second PCI-Express slot on my motherboard and switched to the first one, which is x16. It failed a lot... games crashing or not even starting, with my GTX 770 2GB. So I put it in the second slot again, which my manual says is x8, and it works like a charm. So is it worth it to get the motherboard replaced to get the x16 working? Or would I even notice a difference? Thanks. I only plan in using one video card.

The second slot only works at half speed so it won't perform as well as the first slot. If you are going to be gaming, it would be in your best interest to rma the board if its still under warranty.

Oh shit dude, this is your new board?? RMA that shit today!!!!!!

Never tolerate a defect on a new product...you spent your hard earned money - does a big company deserve that and then offer an inferior component? I wouldn't be letting that fly.

ok so good news it was my mistake didn't know I had to reinstall drivers when using a different slot so problem solved. thank goodness I don't have to take it in

I'd do a full uninstall of drivers, power down, then reset cmos, and finally reinstall drivers. See if that will work.

Well it's in the shop under warranty already, so if any of that needs doing they will either tell me or do it themselves. I'm quite sure it's a defect because it's brand new, so I don't see why the BIOS would be outdated. Main thing is it runs like a champ on one PCI Express 8x slot and hangs and crashes on the x16. I did re-seat the video card and I also unplugged the power cables to it and reattach, along with reinstall the drivers. It actually showed that just the windows standard drivers were installed for it and did not give me the option to rollback drivers. So if nothing is defective than the thing to do I guess would be uninstall all video drivers and then reinstall, as maybe the other driver was conflicting.

Have you never had a new motherboard before? You almost always update the BIOS, first thing. I don't think I've ever had a motherboard that didn't have a newer BIOS available to download before setup.

This is something you should have checked, and could have easily done without ripping a new build apart.

Well now I know. I have bought a new motherboard 3 years ago and no BIOS update was needed. I guess it's too late now.

I'm wondering if maybe, as it seemed to need a new driver installation with the different slot, that maybe I need to erase the other one? I asked MX and they said that the 10 series cards require a x16 slot.

Always before powering down to swap for the other PCI-E slot, do a full uninstall of graphics drivers. Then swap it to the new one and let Windows install a temp driver and then install the latest geforce driver. Always. That way you know for sure it's not a driver problem.

Those guys clearly have no idea what they're talking about.

Well sh*t I could still have my computer if it's a driver problem. But this way I will make sure that my $620 investment is working properly. Just going through withdrawals using my low end I5 laptop.

ok got my computer parts back, nothing wrong with them. I guess good to know for sure. I used DDU to remove all drivers and clean installed the new Nvidia driver. Works like a charm! They also recommended reinstalling windows, not sure if that is worth all the the time to do.

Good that it's working.

Even if you don't reinstall windows, definitely check the BIOS version like I mentioned above, quite probable there is newer version available!
