Pentium D or P4

What would be the best to get? Pentium D 2.8Ghz since its a dual-core.

The only advantage that the P4 3.2Ghz has is that its a bit faster at single threaded apps, but alot of new apps and games are multi-threaded. Windows is also multi-threaded.

now does dual core baisically mean there are 2 2.8ghz processors smashed into one? like 2 2.8ghz working at the same time?

and would that b equivilent to 5.6ghz?

yes there are 2 processors in one. i dont think it would be the equivalent of 5.6 ghz.

Yes dual core means that there are 2 2.8ghz processors smashed into one..sorta. But it doesn't yeild 5.6ghz. You will only see increase in performance when you're multitasking or running multithreaded applications.

edit: wow...i was beat by ckfordy

and you will start seeing performance when games start to become multitreaded.

so would it not be good for gaming... because i heard different reports on their comparison that AMD was all gaming and Intel was all multi-tasking and media stuff...
i am looking for something in between...
cus i do gaming but not extreme, but i do multi tasking and media stuff to

and i was looking for something well balanced...

like i dont want:
Gaming:9/10
MultiTasking & Media:4/10

or

Gaming:4/10
MultiTasking & Media:9/10

i want

Gaming:7/10
MultiTasking & Media:7/10

something balanced and i read that the pentium d was like that somewhere

yes the pentium D will be fine in gaming and multitasking. but if you have the money i would go for AMDX2

An AMD would be better for gaming, however the Pentium D will also be very good for gaming.

And no, it doesnt mean that they run at 5.6ghz, it means that it can process 2 threads at 2.8Ghz each, vs a Pentium 4 3.2Ghz which can process one thread at 3.2Ghz.

i dont have lots...
can't go over $230

what is a good motherboard for the Pentium D...? thats around $130 at most

I thought that P4's over the 2.6 GHz range were capable of handling 2 threads at the same time without any slow-down, you know, hyperthreading. So, in theory, the P4 3.2 GHz SHOULD be able to handle 2 threads at 3.2GHz at the same time. But again, it only works in theory. Dual core is obviously a TON better.

I heard amd is better for games but i heard it could be problems using a 64 dual core on XP home.
if it did dont you think they would advertise that on the box

No dual core chip + mobo will fit such a low budget.
i think he has 230 for th chip and 130 for the board, i think!

If so he may be able to build a dc box with the 8/920.
Although i'd be tempted to spend a little less on the mobo, and a little more on the CPU, and perhaps look at the X2 3800+

nonono that wus just the how much i wus willing to spend on a processor... and i decided to get amd athlon x2... the one in my signature...:D
