I would prefer to avoid water-cooling if possible.
Seems I'll fit my 460's as you did after reading that article.
What about air coolers. I looked at the corsair A70 but it seems that if I ever want to use all six ram slots, that it will not fit.
 
Yea, honestly the H50/H70 solution doesn't appeal to me - Maybe if performance was significantly better than the upper end air coolers.

I don't really know if I'd have heat issues with my 460s in the upper two slots. I was running a pair of 4870s when I got this MB and the upper card was running about 8c hotter. After I learned how little, (if any), the performance loss was with one in 8x I decided to run a card in the bottom slot when I got the 460s.

There are a few X58 boards that will allow 2 cards to run full 16x with some air space between them, the ASUS Rampage III Extreme, and I believe the ASUS P6T6 WS Revolution, and the ASUS P6TD Deluxe.

You wouldn't see much of a performance drop from 8x/8x Xfire/SLi. Anyway, the P6X58D-E supports x16/x16, and it doesn't look like they'd be too packed, considering its an ATX board and judging from the pictures of it.

My 4870s had about 3/8" air space between them - really too little for any cool air to work between the cards.

On the cooler, I'd agree on the Frio based on reviews. I think the Zalman CNPS10X also has good reviews, and put the Prolimatech Megahalems on your list. Kinda of hassle because you have to buy a fan, but since I've tried four different fans now, I've done all the hard work and can tell you what fans work best. The mounting system on the Megahalems is exceptional and thermal performance is right up there.
 
Would definitely take a tip on which fan is best suited.

Some fan recommendations for the Megahalems, (with US links)

#1 Some Silicon Fan Mounts. Nice little cushions between the fan and the cooler

Scythe SY1225SL12LM-P, Very quiet, probably the best choice for light overclocking, not powerful enough to hold temps over ~4.0

GELID Solutions FN-FW12BPL-18, Rather expensive, but pretty blue LEDs. More powerful and louder than the Scythe

Rexus 1212025BH-PWMG, My current favorite, Most powerful - Will hold temps in check up to about 4.2. Quiet at idle, But roars at about 2800 RPM loaded. Modestly priced but no pretty LEDs

With the narrower width setup I should still have my 6 memory slots available should I wish to put 3 more sticks in later, without having to settle for ram without heat sinks.

Don't get the Armageddon, I've seen some horrible reviews of it, plus you have to supply the fans, so it's more expensive than better coolers such as the Frio.
The fans posted are good though they aren't necessary if you don't get the Armageddon or other cooler without supplied fans. Do you know what case you want yet? Take a look at the CM 690 II advanced/basic, that's a very good case for the price.

EDIT: You said the 800D. The 690 is better value IMO.
 
You're buying 12GB (3 x 4GB) aren't you? Really that's considered overkill for a general use machine. I can't imagine a need for 24GB anywhere down the line. I wouldn't worry too much about blocking that first DIMM slot.

Oh, if you do end up with a cooler that needs a separate fan, you'll want a PWM fan, a PWM fan increases/decreases RPM in response to CPU temperature. Quiet at idle, only loud when it needs to be.

I understand that it may not be necessary, I was just wondering if there's a cooler available that would not interfere with other parts of the system, and found the Armageddon. Obviously if there was not a sufficient alternative then I would happily forgo the 6th DIMM slot, but whilst options are there...

Yea, I understand what you mean. Unfortunately the effective coolers are pretty thick. Might look at frosty tech, http://www.frostytech.com/top5heatsinks.cfm Xigmatek S1283 comes to mind, but probaly only good for modest OCing.
 
Pulse Width Modulation Most of the fan headers on the motherboard are 3 pin, (3 wires are positive, negative, and sensor that reports fan speed), The CPU fan header, On the other hand, will be a 4 pin PWM header with the fourth wire carrying instruction to the fan for RPM. As the temp of the CPU rises the fan speeds up in response. These parameters are adjustable in the BIOS settings. With a PWM fan, the fan runs slow and quiet the 95% of the time that the processor is at a low load state, but will speed up as needed to maintain safe temps as the CPU encounters a load. Some people will run a non-pwm fan on the cooler, it will work, however, you will either have a fan that is running fast (and loud) at all times in order to protect the CPU from overheating when it is loaded, or you will have a fan that is running too slow to protect the CPU adequately when loaded. That's why the majority of coolers with fans come with PWM fans.

That would be the problem with the Armageddon. There are very few 140mm PWM fans to choose from, and the one's I saw at Newegg looked to be too weak for a CPU cooler. You would be forced to use a non-PWM fan which would run at the same spped at all times.

Woot, got an e-mail earlier (don't check them often) saying it's already ready. They received the cpu cooler and ram faster than expected (reason behind the 2 day wait). Going to start on this tomorrow :)
So excited, a little nervous though.
A quick one, grounding myself via the wrist strap, what is the best way? As frying anything tomorrow will really mess up my arvo.
