ok so i apologize in advance for this being a long post but i really need some help here... any feedback would be great.

so i have a logitech wireless keyboard and mouse and the other day i turned on my computer and it said it wanted to check for updates and found some and started downloading them... i came back a while later and the computer was completely hung, nothing i did could get it unfrozen so i restarted it. then it wanted to do a chkdsk when it started up and it couldn't make it through and kept saying some error message. but i fixed that by using the recovery on my xp disk. now it will start. but then when it started up my wireless keyboard and mouse weren't working so i had to break out the old wired guys. also it gave me an error message of 'enumerate win32 cdrom drive fail' or something like that and i couldn't see my dvd drive. i read somewhere pc probe might have something to do with it (which i had run on start-up) so i unistalled it and now it will boot without that error message, but I still can't see my dvd drive. so i really have no idea what to try.... ideally i'd like to get my dvd drive working again and my wireless keyboard and mouse back up but i'm out of ideas.

thanks to those of you who made it through this... any help would be great.

Chris

sounds like u got a nasty !!VIRUS!! well thats all i can think of anyway.

Tip:always install stock drivers at first an never update unless the driver u want to update does not work

A reformat might be the quickest and most efficient way....

Try uninstalling those wireless drivers and reinstalling them.

so you're saying i should reformat my harddrive? cuz i really want to try to avoid that because i'd have to move like 200 gigs of movies, 150 gigs of music and 150 gigs of tv shows off it before so i don't lose that. i was going to try to uninstall my wireless stuff and reinstall it but i can't reinstall because i can't see my cd drive.... i have to figure that out first any other ideas?

yea it starts up i thought somehow it might be drivers so i reinstalled my ide drivers (my dvd burner is an ide drive) and tried to install usb drivers but it said i didn't have to cuz i had higher os than xp with sp 1 so i'm at the same place i was... everything runs fine i can go on the internet and use any programs just can't see my dvd drive or plug anything with usb

Well, I've had this happen many times. It was never a loose cable (cause I'm that type of guy that octa-checks)...

A reformat might clear things up fast... But that's just IMO.

Look for loose cables first. Is the DVD Drive detected by CMOS? During POST?

yea if i go into set-up when i'm starting up the machine it sees the dvd drive so i know its connected and all that its a software issue.... the usb is what bothers me the most like the usb on the motherboard don't even work are there any programs that can check this shit or like tell me if i dont' have proper drivers and what not?

ok so i can see the drive in device manager but there are ! all over the place. they are next to:

Memorex DVD+-RAM 510L v1

Everything under the sound, video and game controllers
Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio
Video Codecs

Under System Devices
Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator

Under Universal Serial Bus Controllers
USB Composite Device
USB Composite Device (there are two both with !)

so what do i do to get rid of all of these ! because if i right click it wants me to update drivers but i can't update from the cd drive because its messed up.

That's... quite alot.

New drivers, ect...

But the DVD Drive does not need a driver... Try another optical drive. I've had multiple things not show up on a reformat, but show up after another reformat...

i tried like rolling back drivers and shit like that but still nothing works.... is there anything else i can try? i even went to the asus site and tried downloading drivers and saying load those but it wouldn't

Yea I've only installed my OS the one time when I set my computer up. Like I said this all happened when I was downloading updates for logitech and my computer froze and I had to restart it. So its weird that they all randomly just gave out. But what can I try to do to fix it?
