I know this sounds far fetched and some may disagree with me, but try installing AOL.. when AOL starts up after install it searches for an internet connection and installs/modified drivers to get your adapter working... IF it finds a connections, opena browser and see if that solved the problem..
Also another thing I forgot to ask is are you using an Ethernet card or are you connecting your modem via USB, because if USB that will take us in a different direction..
Are you able to access the internet from another computer near by, or just at work? I would like to help you get this issue resolved asap just as I am sure you would..
Few other details to ask is what Windows are you using? Vista/XP Home, XP Pro, SP1, SP2, etc..
Is your computer custom built, a major brand i.e Compaq/HP, Dell, Gateway, etc?
