I am trying to create a new broadband internet connection, but when i go through the new connection wizard, on the last step it says that my connection should already be configured and ready for use, but I don't have a connection. It won't let me create a new one. It will allow me to create a connection for dial-up or broadband that requires user name and password, but not for broadband connection that is always on. someone please help me

Click Start > Control Panel > System(if you don't see system, click "Switch to classic view"), Under System window, Click the Hardware Tab, Then Device Manager.. Click the plus by the network adapters and tell me if you see anything and if so does it have a yellow exclamation mark, or a red X or anything like that..

well that's kind of a problem. I'm at work right now, and when i do get home where i can check, i won't be able to get on here to let u know. but i will look when i get home and let u know tomorrow. if there is an exclamation mark, what does that mean?

ok if it's disabled, how do i enable it? And would it still let me create other types of connections if it was disabled?

Just right click it and you can enable it, but if there's and exclamation mark, then you might need to re-install the drivers...

Sometimes it helps to right click it and uninstall the device, then click the refresh button and most of the time windows finds the appropriate driver for it and installs it automatically...

If that doesn't work, take down as much info as you can and post it here when you get back to work...

ok i went home and did what u said. When i clicked on network adapters, by the way it didn't show up until i went to view and clicked on show hidden devices, but anyway when i clicked on it, it branched down into five other things. I can't remember what they all were, but the first one was something like parallel adapter, then two of them had something to do with IP, and i can't remember what the last two was. But none of them had any exclamation points or red x's. One thing i noticed here at work on this computer, is that when i click on network adapters, it doesn't have any of those things that mine had, it only has one thing, Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller. My computer didn't have anything like that on there. What do you think?

Hmm... well at work they will have a a different setup, so I would worry about theirs..

I know this sounds far fetched and some may disagree with me, but try installing AOL.. when AOL starts up after install it searches for an internet connection and installs/modified drivers to get your adapter working... IF it finds a connections, opena browser and see if that solved the problem..

Also another thing I forgot to ask is are you using an Ethernet card or are you connecting your modem via USB, because if USB that will take us in a different direction..

Are you able to access the internet from another computer near by, or just at work? I would like to help you get this issue resolved asap just as I am sure you would..

Few other details to ask is what Windows are you using? Vista/XP Home, XP Pro, SP1, SP2, etc..

Is your computer custom built, a major brand i.e Compaq/HP, Dell, Gateway, etc?

I have already tried the AOL thing, it didn't work. I am using Ethernet. I don't know what an Ethernet card is, but i just hook it into the Ethernet hole in the back of my computer. I tried to hook it up through USB but it said i needed to install the software and i don't have any, for some reason i didn't get a disk with my modem. But i have had my service for 6 months or so and haven't had any problems until now. I did a system restore, (probably should've mentioned that earlier), and that's when my problem occurred. I have an older Compaq computer with windows xp home, and it's not a custom built one or anything, i bought it from staples about 3 or 4 years ago.

I kept getting all kinds of weird pop up windows with all kinds of weird error messages. I can't remember what all they were, or what they even meant, but it was getting annoying. They didn't seem to be really effecting anything, but it was still annoying. Since the restore, all of that stuff stopped, and my computer is working perfectly all except for not being able to create a connection.

Didn't you get any kinda CD from your ISP? Every single ISP I've been with (several ISPs in different countries) has sent me an installation disk that does pretty much everything for me.

hmm.. I would go back in the device manager, and uninstall every network adapter, then reboot, and hopefully windows will detect the working one(s) and reinstall the drivers properly... At least it SHOULD..

try that and lemme know what happens and we'll go from there...

not around the area I'm, you just need your network card to be functioning properly and the modem from the ISP needs to software, just plug and play..

Oh and what kinda broadband is it that we're talking about? Wired/wireless? WiFi? What type of router do you have/how is it hooked up to your comp?

Wired, and it's just a cable modem (not sure what kind) hooked up with an ethernet cord.

Well as far as the software thing goes, i've had my service for 6 months or so and haven't needed it. It only asked for software when i tried to hook up my modem via USB

ok i tried that but it wouldn't let me uninstall any of them. it said that the device may be required to boot up computer.

I borrowed my friends laptop so if anybody has any more ideas i can try them and let u know right away if it works or not

Open the device manager, and click the plus by network adapters, and take a screen shot for us.. (Print Screen Button, Then Open MS Paint and press Ctrl + V, Save and maybe put on floppy for the laptop to upload to say imageshack.us, and post the forum code here)

An Image would help us out alot if you can do it...
