i was wondering, is it possible to use your burner so much that it won't stop working? Like my burner won't burn dvds anymore, and when i put a dvd in, it wouldn't recognize it, but the dvd would work on a regular dvd player.

they can burn like a few thousands discs estimated. like anyone would end up burning that many :) thats what hdd's are for...

A laser is a light they burn out (well actually dull over time)
Does it burn cd’s?
Does it read dvd’s
I know burners have 2 lasers but maybe it’s something else maybe in the buffer or cable/software fault?
try a cleaning disk first before you bin it;)

it is imminent that eventually every part in your computer will cease to work. I burned 12 dvd's of data on afternoon for about 5 hours straight, then all of a sudden, it just died.

on average use dvd burners are extermated to have 2000 hours of use before they need replacing, having said that its also worth trying a lense cleaner just incase.

No wonder....you worked it to death:D

if you read the manual, most burners have a duty cycle less than 100%

so using them for long periods of time in a row can in fact shorten the length of the drive's life significantly.

this is why there's $30 16x drives, and proffessional 16x drives that still cost over $100.

lower jitter, better error correction, and higher duty cycle

If you burn to many dvd's you can overheat the burner causing it to fail. But in normal use they should last a long time thats if you get a good one. My original sony viao burner is still going strong since I got it back in 2001.
