Power or no power

I have a gaming computer, water cooled, 750 W. When I go to bed or leave the house for let's say five hours or more, should I shut it down ?
My concern is not only saving energy, but would it result in a longer lasting
computer ?

My question to you is, why would you not shut it down? A computer with an SSD only takes several seconds to power on. I wouldn't leave it on, power usage aside you wear out mechanical components such as fans quicker, and you risk your loop leaking with no one to notice and stop it.

This.

It really is a no-brainer. Makes no sense to leave it on unless you were rendering something.

What if I'm only going to be gone for one or two hours.
Why do you want to leave it on? If your computer isn't doing anything and you know you will be away for an hour plus, turn it off. You aren't saving anything by leaving it on.

My roommate leaves his computer on all the time. After a while it goes to sleep and turns everything off but then will randomly start again but still be in "sleep" mode with no video output. I think I remember seeing something about Asrock boards doing something like this for humidity or something.

The only time I"ll intentionally leave my computer on is in the winter when my bedroom is really cold. Two monitors and a big ol' desktop warm it up nicely. :D

I start my computer in the morning because

1: It's part of the BOINC network, so it IS doing something
2: I remote into it throughout the day

That's fine if it's doing something, but the OP only said he leaves his gaming computer on, and hasn't made any indication that it actually does anything while on.

What do you need to do remotely on your computer when you are away? Is it just for file access?

Usually file access or if I need to browse a website that is blocked at work.

Might be easier to just get a NAS setup that is also a VPN server. It would definitely provide a better web experience. Even my AC68U router can act as a NAS with an attached USB 3.0 drive, and can be a VPN server.

I'm at school, so none of that would work for me ;)
