powerful computer...help

okay so i made these specs a couple months ago.
they are still decent, but i'm looking for an even better computer.
right now i'm looking for a dual dual core computer that will not only run photoshop and 3DSM with ease, but also be able to play the latest games.

here's what i came up with a few months ago (not sure if everything is compatible [the ram probably isnt], but it gives an idea of what i was looking for)

the numbers before each item were the prices when i created the spec. the prices have dropped a bit. for example the graphics cards cost about 140 a piece now with mail in rebate and the motherboard costs 305.

if anyone has a spec that would maximize my money (2k-3k) with all the recent products, then i'd be grateful to know. i'm not sure what's the best thing to buy right now (especially with the high prices on the quadcores and such). any dream computer specs anyone has with a budget between 2k and 3k?
 
A single Core 2 QX6700 would be better but the best on the market before overclocking is 2 74-FXs but theyre bloody expensive, any I'd get a single 8800GTX or dual 8800GTS but 2 8800GTX would be awesome if you could get it,
how bout this, tell be your budget and ill so you a much better Computer

The 4 Gb of ram 4 cores and 10k RPM HDD will make it nice for rendering and the 8800GTX can run any current game max.

first time builder, my budget is between 2k-3k. i think two fx-57's might be possible...considering they cost about 450 a piece.

I think you should go for 700W PSU... Just my opinion becuase your comp looks like a gamers build :D

Two 74s are better than 1 QX6700 in most multi-threading apps I'd get one if the mobos weren't 500 bucks (I agree with you on the 57s through... there terrible)
 
oh sorry, mean two fx 74's not 57's aha.
just been really tired recently. i get things mixed up.

so wait, one quad core is better than two fx 74s?

In certain situations they better each other. However the Core 2 Quad has the advantage of only having to communicate between the two dies whereas the AMD FX series have to communicate via the motherboard.
 
The FX74s are worse because there are not going to be many more processors for the AMD socket used for 4x4, they consume 75% more power and the motherboards are alot more expensive

and the motherboard wasnt that expensive (330 vs probably around 250-310 for an intel quadcore motherboard). the qx6700 is 980 dollars anyway...and the fx-74s are only 410.

some of the stuff is retail (motherboard, cpus, etc) so the price may be able to be trimmed a bit more. the pricedrop could also give me some extra cash. but i think thats for intel only...

i'm going to need a bit more cash for the dvddrives and cooling devices. i heard QFX get pretty hot. i'm not sure about the graphics card....650 is a big chunk of my budget. wouldnt it be better to just get two and run them in SLI mode?

any suggestions on my current setup would be nice. i dont want to get the intel quadcore because i think it will lose its edge in the future. ANY improvements would be nice (like price vs effectiveness). any problems in compatibility would also be appreciated.
