Problem with GPU fan

I couldn't decide which topic that this would fit into, so idc if it gets shifted around.

Here's the problem:

I have an HIS ATI HD4850 512DDR3, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161259 . I have never had a problem with temperature before, and have never tried overclocking. So I have not had any reason to change fan speed or anything. However, I recently got Starcraft II; that game is literally melting people's GPUs. With my case closed, the game will get my video card up to 110+ degrees. So I opened my case and put a small desktop fan about 6 inches away from the card, and it still gets up to 90-100 degrees after playing for about 10 minutes (the card idles at 47-48 with this setup). This of course scares me, because this is a game that I play for 5+ hours at a time.

So I wanted to change my fan speed. For some reason, Catalyst control center does not have the option to control fan speed (yes it is the latest version). I tried the manual fix by creating a profile and editing the file, yet there was no difference in sound or temperature between 25% and 100% fan speed. So I downloaded Rivatuner, and again, there was no difference in sound or temp between 25% and 100%. Obviously, my fan speed is not changing. I can't figure out why.

Has anybody else ever come across a problem like this? I'm completely stumped on this

i am assuming you tried enabling overclocking in the ccc overdrive tab, right?

you could also try msi afterburner to see if that works.

Yeah I enabled overdrive on CCC, the fan speed adjuster isn't even there. I'm downloading MSI afterburner atm, hopefully this can get it to work.

Ok, I downloaded MSI afterburner but the fan speed options are all grayed out. I turned off the fan speed options on rivatuner, and still nothing. However, the fan speed is reported by MSI afterburner to change when the system heats up. Yet, the sound of the fan does not get louder. http://img517.imageshack.us/img517/6639/19013083.jpg

Edit: I wanted to point out that the temps are much better atm, but thats still with the open case and fan blowing directly on the card. I want to be able to keep the case closed and have these temps, and want to be able to turn my fan up to 100%.

Update: I have updated the BIOS on my graphics card and my motherboard, and neither have solved the problem. However, I now have to option to change fan speed through Catalyst Control Center. It still does nothing to actually speed up the fan however.

If anyone has any ideas for me to try, please help lol. I'm completely stumped.

What graphics card did you upgrade from? When i went from a 3870 to a 4850 fan control didn't work until i reformatted windows and reinstalled the drivers.

I didn't upgrade, I put in the card when I built the system. Did you have Vista 64? And exactly what 4850 did you get?

Ok well, I never figured out the problem with the fan, but don't need to anymore.

I tested out temperatures with other games, and with very low graphics settings on multiple games, i was still reaching 100+ degrees. Something was obviously wrong with my card. I decided to take my card apart and see what the deal was. Turns out most of the thermal paste that came with the card had dissipated, and the rest hardened into a powdery mess. After cleaning it off and putting on some new arctic silver, my temps under load are now in the low 50's.

So it cooled my card down by 50 degrees. That is insane. Lesson learned lol.

Yeah, I'm thinking of doing this with my less than a month old 5870, applying new paste, as well as my CPU. I should have lower temps than I have. Good to see the problem is solved though. Good detective work. Question though, how often should one re-apply thermal paste to the gpu and cpu? Not trying to jack the thread by the way.
