Processes (how many is too many)

For a good system optimisation, I suggest you download the free trial of Tuenup Utilities 2006. It is a fully featured program for 15 days, it acts just like the full version for the trial. downlaod it and use the Registry Cleaner, Disk Cleaner, Registry Defrag, System Optimise, Startup Manager, pretty much everything. You can get it at cnet.com search for tuneup utilities 2006. This got my boot up times to about 1~1.5 minutes from power on to desktop. The Windows XP loading bar makes about 3 sweeps across the bar and i'm to the welcome screen for about 5 seconds.

I've also did a semi-barebones clean of Windows XP. You wouldn't believe how much s**t Windows XP is loaded with. You can get the XP operating system down to 500MB if you don't want to use any extra features. The Help and Support Center is 50MB!! of help files. I got my Windows folder down to about 1.5GB from 2.2GB. It also includes backups of BOTH service packs, that is about 750MB right there.

Also, unused drivers slow your comp down too. For example, if you don't use Serial Ports, then disable their driver in the Driver Manager.

If i use the trial...will everything still be optimized after it expires, or will it all go back to normal?

Also, did you "optimize" XP and slim it down with this program you mentioned, or a different one?

I assume it will stay optimised since it would be kind of dumb for a program to replace all of the bad registry keys and fragmentize the registry and undo all that stuff that was deleted. I even got this program to show old deleted files from 1998, I bought this drive refurb :P. It seems as though this drive was previously used for backup because about 1000 recoverable files were Microsoft backup file format.

No this was manually. The site I found has EVERYTHING you can delete from windows. I will post it when I find it.

Also, I timed my boot up from power to desktop and it is 40 seconds unoverclocked. :D I can shave 3 seconds if I stop it from checking my CD Drive for a boot CD each time though...

Is there a way (or a program) that we can use to find out why some of these processes are running? Like, what program launched them or what folder they come from or anything? I dont know what most of these processes are, theres about 25 of them total.

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services > Read everything in the left hand bar, it usually describes what each does.

Also

Start > Run > type "msconfig" > Go to the last tab and look at which proccesses start at bootup, and where they originate from.

Also, type the process name into www.google.com and search for it. More than likely the first few links describe it accurately.

Awesome, I'd appreciate it. I'm all about tweaking XP in every way i can to preserve the "speedy feeling" i get with this ever aging computer.

I used that one program you mentioned but it didn't do much. I think this is because i use CrapCleaner which is very similiar. I clean a few times a day sometimes. But if you never clean out your PC like these programs do then i can see where it is very useful. It's a little more descriptive than CrapCleaner.

71!! Thats a lot!
ya i know, but by DesktopX takes up about 7 processes, my keyboard takes up about 5, my sound card takes up around 4, and i have a few programs that i run.

you can't be using all 71 of those programs... i don't even think you're using half of them... do you close them out before you continue running programs on your system?

ok let me scratch that... processes. regardless w/e ur runnin, either or, it's still gonna make ur computer lag. i suggest u close the ones ur not using if u want ur computer to run at a quicker pace

69 processes is definitely too many running
Only if you're expecting less :)

the only reason i ask this is because if you go to the task manager, you should organize the username programs together that are under your account name... then go from there and close all of the programs you're not using
Uh..... i get a sneaking feeling svchost is supposed to be there....

In fact im pretty damn sure you cant even launch 71 programs (normally).... after a certain time, the system requests to create more windows just kinda fail quietly ... now with shell launching ... the sky's the limit :P

Praetor, that doesnt count :P

When i said i had 71 processes, that was when everything except 1 page in IE was open! Mainly because of DesktopX, X-Fi, and Norton.

30 processes, 344 threads.

I had 36 before I took a couple items off the startup list. 25 is amazing - not sure I could get that low.

But it only takes 14 seconds to shut down and 53 seconds to boot from BIOS to everything loaded on the desktop.
