go to run > msconfig, then de-select all the things you dont want to load up with your computer. This will get rid of alot of processes.

windows cannot find the process msconfig, but i remember seeing it somewhere. any other way to find it?

when my PC boots up (it takes around 30 secs) it loads 10 processes, then i load all my aplications that im going to use and it usually doesnt go above 25 processes

this is the screenshot i that took when i was typing this post

Doesn't that cause msconfig to ask you if you want it to run again at every boot?

Only the first time you reboot after changing something, then it doesnt ask you again until you make changes.

Wow. I have some of my programs set to load on startup (i.e. anti-virus, firewall, ad blocker). Can you give me any tips on how you got so few processes? Was it just using msconfig and the Run folders in the registry?

first i found this site, then i went to START => SETTINGS => CONTROL PANEL => ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS => SERVICES and followed the site instructions (which services to set on disabled, manual, automatic)

then i clicked on START => RUN => type MSCONFIG, clicked on normal start up, then went to services clicked on "Hide all Microsoft services" and clicked disable all, then i went on startup which is next to services tab and clicked disable all and that did the trick ;-)

That lowers the processes, but some apps require processes in order to run. Like most anti-virus programs, and many other apps.

you can start your anti-virus when ur pc boots up, i use Norton antivirus 2006 and it isnt loaded all the time, i start it when i scan my comp

yeah apps require prosesses, so set them on manual so they load when u need them, they dont have to be loaded all the time ;)

EDIT: i'll reboot my computer and take a pic of all my loaded processes

hey, didnt had time to read through all the pages of this thread. If no one mentioned it, you can go to run and type in msconfig, then go to startup tab and click on disable all. You would be asked to restart your machine. Do it and your machine should start up only loading default processes.

Praetor, that doesnt count :P

When i said i had 71 processes, that was when everything except 1 page in IE was open! Mainly because of DesktopX, X-Fi, and Norton.

what is DesktopX

msconfig is not made to use just to shut down startup programs, its a diagnostic tool!! You can just open the programs and uncheck start up with windows!!

Technically, you can de-select everything in the "services" and "start-up" tabs and your computer will run fine, but it will be more like safe-mode.

But there are several apps that i want to start-up with windows, such as ATI Tool, SpeedFan, AVG, and a few others.

Why are there often multiple instances of svchost.exe? Right now I have five instances, one for local service, two for system, and two for network service.
