Buddy is building a new PC. Is there any type of price drop or new processors coming out anytime soon? Anything comparable to the i7 920s?
Nah since I7 is the king the only drop will be a new I7 (low watt versions) which I don't see happening since AMD isn't even close to bringing out a competitor.
I would get a Phenom II X4 set up....nice fast and overclocks well....I7 is nice but at the end of the day unless your doing high-end CAD/Graphics etc your not getting your money out of it. Spend the cash saved on a GTX 295 or SLI 4890s or something.
........ they are selling plenty at 279 - and right now AMD doesn't have a processor that can knock it from king of the hill. ( outside of i7's with a higher clock speed with a considerably higher price )
According to most benchmarks and review websites, the Phenom II X4 CPU's consistently perform higher in intense games than Intel's flagship CPU's, which cost more than twice as much!
All other benchmarks, owned by Intel, are only won by a small margin, and are benchmarks for things that very few people actually need CPU power for.
Of course, if you can afford a top-end Intel system, go ahead and get it! Every little bit of power always comes in useful down the road!
Phenom II, or LGA1366 based core i7 would be the only routes i would take.
Why ? What is wrong with LGA 1156 socket ?
Core i5 750 (Lynnfield) is going to cost $195 and it will probably perform as good as AMD's flagship CPU. And P55 motherboard will be cheaper than X58

Exactly. Seems there will be much more flexibility with the socket 1156.
Triple channel memory doesn't make much difference over dual channel memory
Furthermore, Lynnfield use an updated turbo boost which can auto-overclock to higher speed than LGA 1366 processors when not all cores are used. I think this is much more usefull than Triple channel memory
Check these benchmarks came out today for i7 860 (which is based on Lynnfield architecture)

It is faster than i7 920
16 lanes of pci-e?Give me a break.
We're not talking about need here. No one needs an i5 or i7 setup either.Who cares? Most people don't run more than one graphics card anyway, and
no one really needs more than one anyway.
That's why most are recommending the Phenom II route.
Before you go bashing the i5, let's at least see the price point it comes out as - and some Benchmarks. I have been keeping a passive eye on the i5 and haven't seen anything quantifiable in terms of performance. They will be out soon enough - and then we can talk about what chip is the best value at what price point.
