HI,
I recieved a computer to fix tonight where the os xp home edition system files were corrupt. I tried to use my xp home edition cd but use the product key that is labeled on the a sticker on the side of the computer that needs fixing. It didn't work. I did this only once before and it worked. I'm curious as to why it didn't work. Don't all computer repair shops have a copy of all the os's and when they need to do an install/repair they use there own cd's but use the owners product key labeled on the computers they are fixing.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me please....thank you.soda

Most likely the computer you were fixing has an OEM license and you were using a full retail install cd. You have to use the same flavor of the OS when reinstalling. You would need to obtain an OEM copy of the OS and then use his key.
