question about AMD " black edition " - OC ?

Reading a new introduction article on www.thetechreport.com on the new Athalon IIx4 955 Processor - they make a referene to the " black edition " of their processor.

And since this is a new flagship for AMD, the 955 is a "Black Edition" processor with all of the privileges that title bestows—pretty much just "easy overclocking via an unlocked multiplier," but hey, that's not a bad perk

I thought pretty much any processor was overclockable if you had the right MOBO. Reading this article - it seems to suggest some CPU's are more or less overclockable than others.

If someone wanted an AMD processor that's overclockable - should they always solely at the " black edition ". OR - are all processors overclockable - more or less - but some are better suited for heat reasons?

Trying to understand " black edition " more and the level of significance it has in evaluating an AMD processor.

Thanks

The black edition cpu's use have an unlocked multiplier, and this allows you to overclock the cpu without having to overclock the fsb. This makes it easier to achieve higher overclocks, as your northbridge can become unstable when you are clocked at extremely high Front Side Bus clocks;)

Don't the Extreme processors also have an unlocked multiplier? or no This stuff kinda confuses me :)

Yes, the intel extreme edition processors also have an unlocked multiplier, just amd prices theirs at $20-30 above the regular cpu's while intel prices the extreme editions at 4-5x the price of the lower cpu's.

damn intel.. :( Why do they have to do that! lol I'll be fine with the Core i7 920 thank you :)

Supply & Demand, the higher priced ones will overclock better,so those who want the best performance have to pay a (very high) premium. But luckily many motherboards are capable of high enough fsb's to come close to the speeds that you can overclock the higher ones to(except of course extreme ocin with like ln2/dry ice)

So you can OC pretty much any or most AMD processors with the FSB - but the " black editions " have an enhanced ability because they have an unlocked multiplier?

Is that correct?
