Question about excessive backup useage?

Hi Guys, I have an 80 gig internal HD for backups only. I just noticed that I only have 7.93gb open. When I checked for what files is using up the space, it seems there are two VHD files. One=45,070Kb and another=41,014,884...(dots are included and no indication of Kb or Gb) Then there are some other small XML files ranging from 2kb to 12kb except for one of 2778kb. Those size files seem reasonable. But what is a VHD file? Surely Win 7 doesn't take up 76.6gb for backup?????
What can I do to reduce the amount on this HD so I don't run out of room for backup? The only thing that came up for old files to increase space on the drive was one 10gb file with date from Jan 2014-Mar 2014.
Can I delete that huge file without screwing up my backup? I thought backups were supposed to compress when you send it to another drive.
Any ideas as to what the huge VHD file is?
Advice?

VHD's are Virtual Hard Disks. I don't use the Windows automatic backup, but I can only assume it makes virtual copies of your drive.

Do I wipe the HD clean and start over with a different backup source?

Are you using backup software that will do incremental backups? That means it will only backup added data to the original backup file. Do you have more than 1 backup file?

Not sure about the two files?

I am not sure if I have two files or not. One is showing the name of my pc (Vel-PC) and the other says windows system backups. If I click into the windows file, it has a subfolder of Vel-pc and inside that is the backup file which I have attached.
Can I delete the large file in the Windows backup part?

Please upload your pictures to something like Tinypic and use the image tags instead of attaching the pictures. They're too small to read.

Oh Gosh, I am sorry. I thought .png pics go through really big.
Here it is from Tinypic

It doesn't seem these are much better. Hope you can read it by zooming or something.
Thanks

If all you do is backup your computer with that drive, just format it and perform a new backup, making sure to select sequential backup so that each new backup doesn't create a new virtual hard disk.

Thanks for your help

Thanks. I was nervous about wiping all that out and starting over but now that I have your blessing, I will do it. I appreciate your kind assistance.:D
