question about plugging in a display to a computer

ok so say i want to hook up my monitor or tv to my computer, there seems to be many options for the wires i can use, but what are the pros and cons of them? like the DVI, VGA and HDMI, those are the 3 i know of, is there any other ones? and which one is overall better?

hdmi is actually the best as it can carry video can audio on the same cable. So in order of least to best.

1. vga
2. dvi
3. hdmi

really? i saw a threat a while ago about this and everyone said the other two were beter then hdmi for some reason

I kind of agree with this comment. HDMI is pretty good (decent connection speed and picture), but I have also read that HDMI falls short of DVI for the fact of type of connection. DVI has more contacts (different grade connections to differ contrast range, color, and such) while HDMI has fewer with the addition of audio. VGA just falls short of both.

This is something that can be researched and found with various responses. From what i have seen from majority for PICTURE QUALITY (not adding the added bonus of audio, just based on picture) was the following order:

1. DVI
2. HDMI
3. VGA
4. S-Video
5. Component Video
6. RCA (can't think of the correct term used, consists of yellow, red, white)
7. Coax Cable

** 1 being the best picture quality, 7 being the worst **

so is there even a noticeable difference between hdmi and dvi or is it more like if you have the option between both just go with dvi

well the audio on the hdmi is supposed to dtraight suck, and the benefit of vga (idk if dvi has it and i know hdmi doesn't) is you can do a scan that will automatically adjust the screen to the correct position so nothing is hanging off the edges.

As far as i know DVI does not allow auto scan. Could be wrong though, just haven't found this feature with my DVI connection. :D

The audio of HDMI is not the greatest, BUT still allows audio reguardless.

My personal favorite is DVI all the way. I still see a better picture then all.

is dvi the most standard? i think i have dvi im not too sure though

it's the one with a ton of dots on most of it, but on one side it will have a different little shaped connector

As far as i know most people use DVI. It is standard on majority computer graphics cards (if not all) that are fairly new. As for monitors, i think they are becoming most common, however you may still buy a cheap monitor without one.

Google DVI port to see a picture of it, and see if you have the connections for it.

DVI and HDMI video is equal, both digital video signals. HDMI audio is only going to go to the built in speakers of the monitor so if you have a speaker set or headset it's pointless. I lean towards HDMI even though I don't use the audio due to speakers. It's personal preference between DVI and HDMI. Also, I use HDMI on my XBOX 360 which goes to my receiver and 5.1 surround sound and sounds amazing with movies, so I'm guessing why the audio sucks on computers is the monitors built in speakers.

Edit: Also HDMI Cables = $40, DVI = $10 and comes with most monitors, if I didn't have HDMI cables laying around I would of used DVI that my monitor came with

If you don't mind me asking, where did you find that HDMI and DVI are equal in picture quality? just curious. I have seen articles that compare that they are close (not too noticeable to the naked eye) but when compared technically, DVI came on top. (i'll try and find the article that i am referring to)

When you use a receiver, yes you are going to have good sound. Optical is deffinately better though. Thus my reasoning for saying "the audio is not the greatest". It is all reference of what you are comparing to. :o
