K, did that.

1) I think re AVG, that the guy in what used to be Uptown computer put that in. I removed it and used the registry editor to remove all traces I could find. Must have missed some I guess. I still have the install program for it (Version 8) stored where I store install programs.

2) Re WinCare2008, that was an empty folder, but I deleted it anyway.

3) Re Issues, too early to tell really. The only issues I've been having is the occasional freeze, and some programs crashing when you do certain things. I tested Corel Photopaint just now to see if it still crashes when you create a new folder to save the file you've been working on, and it didn't THIS TIME, though it might the next. One other program, "ULead Photo Express 4 SE" gives me a window saying it has encountered a problem and must close; and it's still doing that, so I guess I'll have to reinstall it if I can find the disk it came on. Apart from issues though it seems to be a bit smoother and faster.

Thanks again. Sonja is having major probs with her laptop, so I think I'll run your drill on it to see if that improves things. Regards, JHM

Look in the event viewer to see if the errors show up for the ulead program. They would be in the application part of it.

Well I looked at "Event Viewer", (which I very seldom do, cause I can't make any sense of what it says),
and found some surprizes there. I use Perfect Disk 10 running in "Screen Saver Mode" to keep my machine
defragged, so instead of shutting it down at night, I let it run, and after 15 minutes the screen saver cuts in
which brings Perfect Disk to life to defrag it. I also have the machine setup to go into standby mode after an
hour, then shut it down in the morning before going to work. It is this combination I suspect, that is causing
all these "F-Secure" errors. See :

Though it is possible that these errors are also related to that problem. See :

As regards Ulead Photo Express 4 SE, I ran it several times in succession to identify its associated errors.
See :

ulpeev.png

MS also gave me an error message re ULead Photo Express 4 SE. See :

ulpemserror.png

So I decided to reinstall ULead Photo Express 4 SE, but the problem there is it came on a disk with other
software that came with either one of my CD/DVD drives, or one of my video cards, and I don't know which one.
Hunting for it, I was putting various disks in the machine and loaded the disk with Pinnacle Studio 8.4 on it
thinking it might be the one. It wasn't, but I loaded Pinnacle Studio 8.4 anyway since I don't have it installed, and
lo and behold, fresh install - but it wants to shut down as soon as I open it. Runtime error of some sort. Funny
part of it is; as long as I ignore the error message and go on running the program it works; but click OK on the
error message; and it shuts down right away. For errors associated with Pinnacle Studio 8.4 See :

Sorry, for the late reply but my power went out last night due to the storm. Click on those errors from f-secure and let me know what the error says.

Download and run ccleaner from here.

http://download.cnet.com/ccleaner/

Install the program and open it. No need to change any options and click on run cleaner. Doing this will delete all internet temporary files, system temporary files and other files which can slow your system down. This may also fix some of your other issues. Let me know if this gets rid of the f-secure errors all the time in the event viewer.
