Radeon 9600 Pro/9800 Pro

Does it matter much if I get a Radeon 9600 Pro 128 mb or a Radeon 9800 Pro 128 mb? How much does it affect my gaming? Can I get by with a 9600?

Get the 9800Pro ... its in the just-over-$200 range. If you're even considering the 9600 then get the 5900XT (both of which are in the just-under-$200 range)

Sure, but how much better is it, really?
I probably will get the 9800, so you can be totally honest. ;)

the 9800pros have a 350 or a 360 core or whatever but they are able to be flashed to a makeshift xt which is relatively more than the 9600 can do

yah you can flash it if you have the right core and card, but then you will just be against XT cards (assuming you are benching the thing.) if you dont care about scores or anything like that then i guess it doesnt matter, but i wouldn't flash it to an XT and expect it to perform as well as an actual XT card. at least from what i've read...

I dunno. Maybe you sell 9800 but knows 9600 are better? ;)

Nah, can't really remember why I wrote that.
My mistake.

A friend of mine actually called the machine "good", and that's awesome coming from him. ;)

They can (be softmodded)? I wouldnt think so because the XT has a auto-oc feature -- which is all hardware -- and unless you have some spare programmable ASIC stuff lying around (and some solder) that wont be happening ...correct me if im wrong :)

now this is interesting...same 9800PRO, r350core, 128mb card...but its 128 bit. so a little crippled...but a steal for under $160 isnt it? its actually cheaper than a 9600PRO
Provided the clock is the only limitation than yes that would be a decent steal.

What kinda cracked out logic is that?? If people want a system I build it for them -- to spec -- meaning if they wanna try a TNT and Athlon FX53 setup then thats what they get -- regardless, the 9800s typically give more profit than the 9600. The reason I made the comment about the 9800 is that it get's nailed by the price targeting of the 5900XT and the 6800 ... there's almost no reason to get the 9800 anymore:
~175USD -- 5900XT
~225USD -- 9800Pro
~280USD -- 6800

You're foolish if you think the 9800 will last forever (even though it rocks the current low and midrange cards, the X300 and X600)

im pretty sure you can softmod it yes, i know a few people who have, assisted with a better cooler than the stock one of course

380/600 stead of 380/680...not a bad gap...probably easily caught up to
Depends on the make of the memory. Unlike nVidia cards (which use the same memory spec for their low end cards as their high end cards provided they run the same generation) .. ATi cards have specifically matched memory to model ... which means that depending on the card you might get poopier memory :)

oh...i didnt know that. i thought there memory was the same for the 9*00 line no matter what revision it was. interesting.

Relax Praetor. I was only joking in the first place. Guess my humour sucks pretty bad. ;)

Of course such a card won't last forever, but it'll get all (I hope) current games working, and hopefully quite a few games released next year.

Other than that, all I understood was that the 9800 IS the better of the two, obviously. The rest was not really English, was it? ;)

Mine was a farily light comment as well :) It's true .. as good as the 9800 is, the 6800 outpaces it in every way for a bit more and the 5900 isnt thatfar behind and noticeably cheaper ... which is why ive stopped reccomending the 9800 unless they just happen to have $225USD and cant get more (if you do a search back i recc'd the 9800Pro a fair bit). It's not a "bias" or "performance" or but simply performance vs price (also with both the 5900 and 6800 you dont have the possibility of accidentally buying a crippled 9800Pro) so as long as you dont get one of them crippled 9800s youll be fine

Read the box! (or the specs if you're buying OEM :)) (and use common sense when 9800Pros are selling for $160USD)

People I know mainly get Radeon 9600 PRO's becuase you can overclock the video card to neally a Radeon 9800.
